Our 1st gen sequoia needs ball joints soon. I know they are the same style as least the 1st gen tundras. Are OEM the only way to go? Just looking on rock auto they do have like acdelco and beck arnley (so). But thought I've seen that people say OEM is the only way to go? But usually they are co.laring to moog.

I always try to find OEM stuff for my repairs but doesn't mean there couldn't be a better alternative out there these days

I try to stick to OEM when it makes sense to. Otherwise least stick to big brands like an acdelco type. Like the rear shocks for OEM were twice as much as Bilstein 5100s.

The ball joints seem to be one to go OEM on

I don't think I've ever bought OEM shocks for anything, usually just head to Napa for things like that. Ball joints/bushings/tie rods/CV's I will buy OEM.

Depending on year the ball joints are larger. I think that changed in 05 with the vvti and 5 speed trans. I've had better experience with Moogs on my Tacoma than oem. I do inspect them often though.

I'd probably put oem on my Sequoia since it's primarily a street rig and I don't beat on it like I do the Tacoma. They should last over 100k in those conditions easy.

Yeah it's a split year for ours. (2004). So gotta look at that too....which isn't hard just haven't lol.

Sounds like might as well go OEM for these. Ours had a 250k on it now. No clue if they have been done before or not, but both are "wet" now so getting time to do them. Luckily no play to them yet though

What about Independence/Blue Lake. That one was closed too, right?

    Bummer.

Would like to pedal around Tippet again, too. That was a lot of fun getting to check it out.

Blue lake is open I believe although the bridges are closed. So they created a river crossing in 2 places I believe. I haven't done it since as that was established last year. So fait to assume a later year run of that would be best for the river to be lower.

Yeah plus we've added a bunch of other artwork and I think at least 2 or 3 more trails since you were here last. Plus you gotta see my new insane studio.

For a street rig I think Moogs are fine. But OEM is much better quality over all generally speaking.

Yep, I have a '19 Tundra for milder family camping and fishing trips, mostly stock as far as offroading capabilities, one tire size up on 33's. Going over there to fish for the weekend.

Nice. Be curious how the river crossing are. Think theybare pretty steep. Then the trail was pretty interesting in a few places once you get to it. Water damage was getting ugly in a few spots. Might be interesting without sliders if you don't have those.

    Hell ya! How's it play?

I'm trying to envision where this would be. I recall that being a pretty well-maintained road up until the last 5 miles or so.

yeah the water damage was up the actual trail. The road is like almost 30 miles until the trail head. Then you head south over some normal "trail" light rocky stuff. Once you swing to the left and start going up hill and back north and gaining elevation thats where things get interesting. Not hard by any means. But the creek has started to flow down the trail and make for some very interesting spots if you don't have a locker. That and all the UTVer tearing everything up. I think I went after you had been here in like 22 or 23. And it was only going to get worse with the water flowing in certain areas. Once you get up to the mine its fine.

That was 2021. I feel like I'm getting old.

I recall right after it turned left and starting climbing was the hardest part. Took a minute to figure it out with the 2nd gen on 265s back then.

Also your repair from the stupid marmot up there is still going strong!

oh yeah wow haha well I think I went the year after you or so. Can't remember when. Probably have photos somewhere. The spot you're thinking of is probably the spot with that kind of big rock in the middle of the road and there isn't a great line and really flexes the truck out. Then after that is a big washout with the creek. Then it's easy for a while. Then really rocky(normal every time ive been there) then there's a nother kind of "chute" like thing that's also getting some water changes. Then smooth after that with like two fun spots maybe or something.

    Still a fun trail.

Shit I forgot wtf was that even? haha Didn't it chew a harness?
