Bought my 2015 Tacoma Crew Cab in October 2024 w/ only 90k miles.
Previous owner did Bilstien 5100's front & rear. Front set at 1.75".
BUTTTT....the rear has BLACK Sumo Springs. Frame sits on the things most times & makes the truck ride rough. Sure...it's plush with a load in the bed, but that is rare.

So...how the heck do I get away from the super stiff bump stops that are these black Sumo Springs?
The softer ones are stupid expensive. They required a different mounting hardware so I can't just slap a stock bump stop in.

    Uggh!

Couple things you could do, maybe buy a couple bags of sand or gravel from Home Depot to keep 60-120 lbs back there, if you have room. FB marketplace you might get lucky…

Last, post in your local thread to see if anyone wants to swap your sumos for stocks. Someone will probably bite.

or keep posting till you get to 50 posts and post in the b/s/t threads

Get out the saw and cut the black ones down a bit. Then save your money for new leafs springs because those are the reason you don't have room to fit taller bump stops right now.

That's what I did along with HD rear springs and trimmed off the top donut. Previously with the OEM recall springs the full length sumos sit on the stops or with little gap. IMO the sumos were too long for a tacoma with oem springs and they're not a good fix for sagging stock leafs.

The HD springs along with the trimmed down sumos has is worked well for me.

The "taller" Sumo Springs bump stops are supposed to sit an inch from the frame which they do right now. My leafs aren't the issues.

Don't want to cut the tops off those SumoSprings unless someone else KNOWS they have a solid core and aren't hollow. If they're hollow, I'll have NO bump stop & they'll chip & split after a few compressions.

The forum has your picture shrunk so small & I can't resize it to see where you cut it off. From here, it doesn't look like you trimmed it down at all.

I cut the top donut off the sumos with a sawsall. It had 5 donuts to start with.

This is them before trimming, you can see the flat OEM leafs and how the Sumo rests on the frame like I mentioned in an earlier post. Works much better now.

So they're solid foam, not a hollow core?

Yes as much as foam can be solid.

They are solid foam. Many guys have done this already, i'm not just making shit up lol. Even if they were hollow, that's not necessarily an issue. And yes your leaf springs are the issue. Factory leafs are garbage and are flat under no load. They also can't handle much weight, which is why your truck has sumo springs to begin with. You don't have as much room as you need for such a tall bump stop with factory leafs. No bumpstops should be an inch from the frame, that's just Sumo's horrible instructions that guarantees your ride quality sucks because you keep slapping the bumps every time your leafs move. You want at least 2-3" from the bump to frame. Bump stops are supposed to be a last resort, not a leaf spring helper.

Got any pics of your trucks sumos on the truck?

Also wondering why some comments had sumos with 5 layers? I've only seen the 4 layers. They make a taller one that is the 4 layered sumo with a spacer underneath.

Those factory leafs are toast, they've lost any significant arch and got the wave shape starting up, the recall springs toyota put on my truck did the exact same thing over a 5 year period, they got to the point I couldn't hardly carry any weight in the bed without hitting the stock bumps a lot. sumos were a poor fix for that situation. I like them allot with better springs.

Saskabush summed it up very well.

Seems I may not have Tacoma Sumo Springs either. @bkhlrTaco's sent me pics of his & he has 4 hemorrhoid donuts & mine has FIVE donuts. That would explain a lot.

Could be that they may have changed design a little.

Looked up a boatload of YouTube videos. Blue & black installs all the guys were tossing in 4 donut ones.
    Maybe I'll ring SumoSprings.

It's possible. There was/is a sumo for 'lifted' trucks that basically had a black spacer at the bottom of a 4 ring sumo.
It's possible they did way with the bottom spacer and made a 5 ring.....

Thing is, even on lifted trucks (2" or less) the taller sumo isn't needed.

Those definitely do not have an inch of space between the leaves and the frame like they want. If you wanted to be frugal, I'd cut 2 rings off and see how it goes. Worse thing that can happen is you still won't like them, which you already don't. But riding on bump stops is never fun and that will almost certainly help. Sumos are always harsh if you don't have weight as they are designed with the mindset of being more of a helper spring.

For real that reply was uncalled for. But those leaf packs look fine. Factory 4-leaf packs are flat at ride height.
