If the older one gets wrecked, either your fault or other parties, will you be able to get that value out of insurance for a replacement.

You asked what that stuff in your last picture is. I would find out first. It looks like something was applied around the frame cross member and then a lot was put on and dripped off the inside of the frame rail - strange. The edge of the yellow stuff on frame rail looks chipped which means it is hard and would not be a good rust sealant. Have no idea what it is - find out. More importantly why was it put there, it is not stock, or so I believe. That is a RED flag to me.

42k for 2023 TRD Sport with 37k miles, You can buy brand new 4th Gen Tacoma cost around that much, or over in my location. I pass, wait it out until can get better financing, cheaper prices. Or better deals other places besides Carvana.

The stuff on the frame is a corrosion inhibitor.
Depending on your location, Toyota would apply it to the frame when you took the truck in for the frame inspection TSB/Recall.

Also, the on the 2012 the Secondary Air Injection System was "more" problematic.
There is no way to upgrade it to a 2013+ SAIS system. As the provisions for such are not permitted by the ECM.

    I LOVE my 2nd Gen.
But the year model (2012), age (13 years old), and price would put me looking at the 3rd Gen (2020)

The 3rd gen can be a bit harder to work on, and slightly more expansive in parts.
    But they are great trucks.

I'm going to say, go with the 2020. (Even though it too is over priced, IMO. Due to milage.)

2012 TRD Sport – Double Cab Long Bed, 32k miles, one owner, excellent service history. Price: $32k OTD I wouldn't be too upset going with this option if I were you. You get a physical key, manual climate controls, manual cruise control, none of the auto or sensor bullcrap. All the benefits of the 6' bed, while having the 4 doors and room to sit the Family/Friends/Animals. Especially if it's only been a one owner truck with Excellent maintenance records. Make sure all the Recalls/TSB and issues have been completed. If you live anywhere within the salt belt, have it Fluid Filmed. That's another $200 bucks and 2 hours worth you're time you'll be very thankful for going forward. The price isn't great for either Tacoma, but out of the two, I think you made the best choice possible. The 2nd gens are holding their value, and it's only going to climb from here.

Way too much for the gen 2 IMO. The other one is also not a good deal. Also, Carvana sucks IMO, and their lending practices are predatory.

Having been in your shoes before, I'd ask yourself whether you really need that Tacoma right now - or maybe you can hold off until you could get a loan through your local credit union at a rate 1/3 of Carvana and a payment that's half.

Not trying to be preachy but that's my $.02 - otherwise get the 2020.

It works better than nothing. I haven’t seen the long term result of how well it last. I live in the south. My area didn’t get a frame coating. You either got a frame or nothing.

They did do the TSB springs when I went in for the inspection. But only because I asked for them.
