Should I change my oil at 500 miles

Hello Tacoma World,
My friend who recently bought a 4Runner said that the car salesman told him he should change his oil at 500 miles. He said that it is because the engine still hasnt been broken in yet. The salesman told him that it is necessary due to metal shavings being in the oil after approx 500 miles. Has anyone else ever heard of this?

Also, if I do the oil change myself, will it void my warranty?

 

my sales guy said see when you hit the 5000 mile mark. i myself thought that was strange. i have always been told to change oil on a new engine at 500-1000 miles. i would do it if the sales guy said to do it. or take it in so the techs can inspect it. they are the ones who know what to look for.

 

Changing your own oil will not void your warranty. Most car manufactures test the motors before being put into a new vehicle. If you do change your own oil use the factory Toyota oil filters they are better than the aftermarket ones even fram. You may change your oil at 500 miles if you wish but its not needed. Just my 2cents.

 

You can change at 500 and waste your money if you wish. I waste mine by changing synthetic every 5000 miles.

 

Follow the maintenance schedule which was provided by Toyota. Most sales people don't know shit about automobiles.

keep a record of your oil changes and receipts for the oil & filter and you will be OK as far as warranty. keep a good record, sometimes i buy a case of oil at Costco it lasts 2 oil changes so i note on back of receipt both times, date & miles and also put in some kind of log book.

 

I will be changing mine at 500 and in goes mobil1 fully synthetic 5w30 and oem oil filter. I will also be installing my fumoto drain valve.

 

Seems like you really like to push amsoil, more than you like to drive your truck.....you've only driven it 3500 miles in the year since you've had the it!! (according to the dirty air filter thread). At 2500 posts your almost catching up to the miles you put on in a years time, congrats.

 

You can change it when ever you want. Years ago it was common to change the oil at 500 to 1000 miles when buying a new car. Todays engines are assembled in near clean rooms and the filtering is much better better then even ten years ago. I changed mine at 3000, the dealer said 5000, I made the decision to go at 3000 with Mobil 1. Use a top quality dino or synthetic and a OEM filter and you will have no warranty problems. Document the date and milage each time you change it. I use http://www.toyota.com/owners/ The dealer updates it if I take it to them and I update it if I do it myself.

 

I used to change a new car oil at 500 or so to get rid of assembly lubes and wear in metal.
Chris told me it is not needed on the Toyota Tacoma. I believe Chris and do 5000 mile Mobil One full syn changes now.
I could go longer but what the heck I deserve it.

 

I just changed my for the first time around 2,500 miles, next change at 6k and at 10k mobil one goes in...

According to Consumer Reports, oil is actually rated to 7500 miles. I change every 5000 miles. Makes it easy to remember. 5, 10, 15, 20 ...etc.
