Mostly, I will be using it for bringing my little boat to the water and camping. My '21 SR is only 2wd, which no longer fits my needs due to the boat. At lowish tide I had some slip when pulling it out... last thing I need is my only vehicle sliding into the drink. So I bought my favorite Tacoma and will be trading the '21 in on a commuter car once I have this one fixed up enough. The parking break does not work, and the regular breaks are really soft... so that will be the first issue I have to deal with... and the door locks dont work hahaha

I live on the east coast now and do not see myself doing much overlanding at this point.

As long as the frame is solid, the body metal is good and the drive train is in decent shape, everything else is an ongoing labor of love because it doesn't put the truck in the scrap pile.

Rust is the true killer of older vehicles, at some point, barring rarity, it just becomes a financial pit that doesn't end well most of the time. Rust free in demand vehicles go for good money because they are, well, rust free. Rust you can see tends to be just a small part of the actual rust problems a vehicle has.

    Pros:
There is almost no rust on the frame or other areas on the undercarriage. The bed is a little beat up on the drivers side, but not terrible I don't think. The previous owner just did the heads, timing chain water pump. New distributor cap, wires and plugs, new radiator. all the hoses look new as well as the wiring harness also looks new based on the clips and such. Clutch feels pretty good, the transmission feels pretty good as well.

    Cons:
The parking break doesn't work and the breaks are a bit soft. The locks don't work. I cant get the passenger side open from the outside. The fuel door lock is broken. The ignition key can be pulled out at will. Bench seat is not in very good shape. The grill and lights are all held on by zip ties. The interior is brown hahaha. Needs sound system and antenna. And final con... I am not a mechanic. I never learned to work on cars other than what little I had to do on my old school '85 Honda Accord when I was young. I am pretty good with my hands mechanically, just don't know much about cars. So this will be a real adventure and learning experience. Hope y'all don't kill me too bad as I ask a million stupid questions haha

Overall, it is very good project truck!. Have to pull out the drop in bedliner to see what shape the bed is in.

Use a rare earth magnet to hold the gas cap in place. May have to do some fiddling but it'll work.

Motor with 7000 miles just put in. Used transfer case 2 years ago.
Your truck looks like mine. Same color, seat torn in exact same place. I patch mine up. Ive had mine 27 years. Just put a motor in it. On here trying to figure the part that goes in transfer case that records the miles and speed. I had a Machanic that i no longer use but when he changed my transfer case didn't connect that part and just threw it away. Its hard finding these parts. I hope you love your truck like i do mine. Your not too far away im in Georgia.

All of those cons are totally doable. Great truck! Depending on where in SC you are, if you ever need help let me know. Luckily these are simple trucks to learn on, I barely knew how to do an oil change when I bought mine.

Totally makes sense. Even a Tacoma can’t handle being a submarine.

Keep us posted on your progress and again congrats on your new truck!
