I actually had a huge rider policy on the truck for the last 3 years at least. It just got to be too expensive (or so I thought). It's also not super easy to even get your money back even if you have a rider policy. They typically only give you a fraction of what you're insured for.

And I'm not saying my life is worth $50k. But I also wouldn't have done anything too stupid if I rolled up to the address and I thought it wasn't in my best interest.

I rolled up to the truck and it was in an apartment complex. If it was stuck in a garage, or behind a private residence I would have waited for the cops to arrive.

Sometimes I would like to post more, but then again I don’t know if I want everyone to know how much I’ve spent on my truck. It’s not hard to add it all up, it would take a minute to figure out. But there are some things I’ve done, I haven’t said a thing about it. I live in a “low crime” area, which makes us the perfect target, easy to scope and recognize patterns. Lots of cats going missing for a while. Conversely you can leave your keys in it here and it would never get stolen.

My friends’ accord got stolen multiple times. One of the times he walked out of his apt and found it halfway down the block, hopped in and stole it back.

Don't second guess yourself here you definitely did the right thing and didn't put yourself in any excess danger. Can't live life scared all the time.

I've gotta be $30k into mine at this point haha. 100% I'd have gone looking for mine too.

There was no speaker in the airtag.

They may have dumped it once they got the alert that there was an air tag in the vehicle. 100% they would have never found it. :D

The truck also had a dead/dying battery. I had to jump start the truck the day before the theft happened, I drove the truck 2 hours and it must have charged the battery enough that they could get the truck started. When I recovered the truck, I had to jump it. So the chances of them actually being able to steal the truck were super low to begin with.

Maybe they dumped it because it wouldn't restart when they went to drive it again. My hood latch is also way out of whack and takes a special press and pull to release it. 100% sure the thiefs would not figure out how to open the hood to jump it.

I've shot guns competitively for the last 10 years. Not saying I'm John Wick, but I don't hold my pistols sideways either. Same thing as someone who has trained in combat sports getting into a fight/altercation, you've gotta feel confident in what you're going after in life.

Popping a hood to jump a car seems more like an act of courtesy than thievery. But maybe you’re onto something here.

I have a lot of firearms experience as well, but if I thought there was gonna be some shooting I'd get the fuck out of there quick.

Yes, I don't even carry any more as I don't want to be put in a place where my emotions might dictate the next 40 years of my life. But if I saw some young juveniles stripping my truck to pieces in front of my eyes, a force multiplier would have probably came out.

Agree. I always wonder if folks who travel a lot and post selfies online while on the trip fall victim to burglaries. I figured sharing after the trip would be the time to overshare.

Glad you got your truck back!

I also wondered about the airtag alert. I'm an android user and my phone lets me know every single time an airtag goes anywhere with me (wife keeps one with her in her purse). I had wondered if all phones do that, or if they do, I wonder if people have started to ignore it.

Wow man glad you got your truck back and hopefully insurance will cover the damages they did to it.
Seeing that the tag was super helpful in finding it now I don't feel silly for putting a Samsung Tag2 in my truck. I've questioned if it would really work or work as well as the Apple air tags seem to for people.
Not being an Apple user I can't compare them. I do know that while I am in my truck the Samsung find app is recording about a week of location history you can look back on. Like the Air tag it uses other Samsung devices to spot the tag. When I was on a trip in another vehicle for a few days I checked the location history of my truck's tag. It was showing up that another device located the tag at an address that was mine or very close to where I'd left it parked behind my house every day at least once or more.

Apple computers for the win! :amen:

I too use an airtag, as well as a steering wheel lock, and double lock the remote. I would have cried if my truck is missing. It's a garage queen!

    Even lock the Tailgate sometimes.....

OP, please don't get me wrong, I am very glad you got your truck back. But you did take a pretty hefty risk here no matter what you think, so be careful out there!

Now let's talk about that $50K you are now completely out of. Had you taken that $50K and invested it into a few established growth mutual funds, it would have given you a very hefty return over say 25 years (gotta love the power of compounding interest). As your new internet financial advisor, I strongly advise you to quit spending large amounts cash on stuff like truck accessories and invest that money instead! I want to see you retire a millionaire! :)

They might come back for it. Might want to look into putting some kind of kill switch in it.

You're sounding preach at this point. You said your piece. We get it. Those who agree won't be swayed and neither will those who disagree.

I work for one of the larger investment companies in the world, I’m doing just fine haha.

I’m not out anything thankfully, probably will have 20-30 hours worth of phone calls before the dust is settled, but I use a premium insurer so they will get me close. Theft coverage means I will get a full inspection, oil change, alignment, etc. Home owners will cover the property loss. Not sure what will happen in regards to the paint. It’s super white paint and is starting to peel, so Toyota should cover it under the recall anyways.

Currently sitting in the driveway with a dead battery so I’m good for a while. Don’t even want to touch it to be honest.
