I run 285/70/17s on the +4 TRD SEMA wheels, no cutting and no rubbing with stock UCAs. A good alignment is the key, I'm on a 2in lift up front with 5100s on the top setting and a 1 in rear block with SUMO bump stops. The ride is great. I did move the mud guards back about 3/4 of an inch but that was before the alignment. I have done some flexing and beach driving and never rubbed. I personally think 255s is just way to skinny looking for my taste but some like it. Even 285s look skinny to me. I saw no hit in MPGs or power, but I'm tuned, and the speedometer is calibrated. In fact, the tune with 285s is perfect and I get 18 around town and maybe 23 ion a trip.

It's all in the proper offset. Lots of people running 285s with no cutting. Also I think 285s in an SL rating may be lighter than 255s as I think most 255s are C or E rated.

I'm with you - 255 just don't look right to me - I went to the 33s for off roading (yeah and now I want 35s) but the 285s really don't look wide enough for my taste looks wide. I really want 315 but that is just a fantasy for now.

I know it’s rated as a “c” tire but it’s as heavy as an “e” rated one

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
True, but it's not as stiff as an 'E' rated tire.

Spacers are going to increase rub. Aftermarket UCAs, proper alignment, and 0mm offset wheels are your friend when it comes to 285's. Also, not all 285s are created equal when it comes to overall size and knobbing. 285s on mine for reference, no cutting or CMC with aftermarket mud flaps as well:

285/70/17 has a lot of SL options (I have it on my 4th gen 4Runner) with a weight difference of 10 ish pounds per tire between the two. Unfortunately 285/75/16 if thats the tire size OP is going with doesn't come in SL.

stay between +15 and 0 offset and the 285s will fit fine. any more than +15 and youl hit the uca. any less than 0 and your gona get into the cab mount.
