    Kind off curious. Compare 2 different size shows 10 % gain on the width, the rest is practically the same. Can 10% make a difference?

    Love my skinny (255/85r16, and I've run 285's on my gen 2 taco)...they work. Steering feels great, throttle response is barely affected, less stress on the spindles/tie rods etc.

    Been adding supporting mods, and my next set will be skinny 35's (35x10.5r17). These trucks lack torque/HP in the power band most drive in/wheeling(tuning helps a lot if you have 4.10's to start with). However, adding unnecessary rotational weight only compounds the problem.

    Especially for K03's....there are so many tire brands/options out there that have left these in the dust....I've run lots of tires and it'll be a cold day before I run those again (worst wet traction/sand/rock tire I've ever run).

    Thats is exactly my Russian roors told me.. not worth it for me
    265 even closer to 285's

    Agreed - E will be a harsh ride. C is mucho better. But good luck finding a C in that height. Maybe Nitto?

    I don't know that's why I would like to run the experiment to find out how they truly run side by side. Same model tire and run it for a year after being on a 285/295 for the past 3 years. I'm just relaying the feedback I have gotten from the only local guy I know that has tried them.

    I see...
    I went from 245 to 265(about the same as go from 255 to 285) and I dont see any "improvements" . I delayed that the expirement by 3 years. I did gain 20 mm in width and some sidewall, but I lost tons in the performance...
    I've ran tune tunes for 7 years. I do see how the we miniscule width gain can improve the the performance

    I changed from 265/70r17 to 285/70r17 and on road there are 100% cons but off road i have seen nothing but gains in performance. But how much of that was in the width or height or a combination of the height and width. Would the 255 offer the same feeling of confidence and have the same traction increase i won't know or have a real opinion until it's tried.
    Also I upped tire size with the same model so it was a great side by side comparison.

    Dude, look the stat. I dont see how you can "gain" if the stas show no improvements. I'll be a stallion i the bedroom .....with those stats.
    Typical lab experiment errors are 5+ %

    Don't know what to tell ya but that is the perception hence why I want to try the other one to see. I have ran the same trails with a 265 and a 285 and there was a notable difference. That's why I'm saying all of these "stats" only go so far.

    We are driving the same truck. You have a better stereo though. Are you in BC? I drove BC on 245 and 265. Paid the difference at the gas pumps for the same road...

    I've been to Banff and around. Your misconception about US based folks is the speed limit the mountains. This where you feel the burden of heavy tires

    I'm not sure what point your trying to make here iv already stated you feel the effects and cons of the larger tires on road. It doesn't matter where you are geographically a heavy high rolling resistance tire will never do you any favour's on road.

    But you just stated that you paid the price at the pump for the exact same increase ratio? Would that not mean that a 10% increase is not laughable as it had a direct effect on what you experienced. Be it your decreased fuel economy be it an increase in trail performance in mine aswell as a loss in fuel economy.

    10% is 10% just like change is change. Bolt of a 5lb heavier tire and tell me you don't feel it this is why the only opinions of anyone on here that are worth a half a damn are those that have actually run both sizes and all I am saying here is I would like to actually run it myself and feel for a difference.

    Yeah. I've mentioned on numerous threads going with a bigger and slightly heavier tire on daily driver.
    I just do see how you can increase trail performance by less than 1 inch. ...like your friend

    The truth is it's personal preference and how you use your truck and what you are trying to accomplish with your build. How the OP uses his truck and how I use mine are completely different. I try to go off road as much as I can - a few times a month - and I do things off road that push my limits which means sometimes traversing sharp rocks and I definitely do not want to limit travel so I would never not run anything but E rated tires and I removed the sway bar up front (check out Tinker's Adventure on that one) but the OP would not be wise to do that with his use case. The purpose of my truck is to have fun off road - period. The purpose of the OP's truck is much different.

    This thread was started (and mostly discussed) about 16" wheels 285/75/16.. which are practically all e-rated. You're talking about 17" wheels at 285/70.... totally apples to oranges when it comes to a performance hit on the Tacoma. 17" tires have more options with lower weights than a true 33" on 16" wheels.
