Anybody ever driven up Saddle Mountain north of Flagstaff? Im looking at it on OnX and the description says "DO NOT DRIVE IF YOU ARE SCARED OF STEEP SHELF ROADS" but I want to know what its actually like. Looking at taking my 4x4 Class C up there without having to check it out in the truck first.

Peeking on Google Earth and it looks like there's a not insignificant slope but the incline seems pretty mellow for an uphill forest road. There's some kind of solar installation at the top though so it might not be a "drive up to the top and camp" spot.

More heat-related park closures in PHX. I was hiking through South Mountain Park having entered from a neighborhood runoff drain access. When I reached the ramada at the 48th street parking lot there was "caution" tape at the bollards and a sign facing the inside (not car-side) of the trail saying it is closed on "extremely hot days between 8 AM and 5 PM". I was approaching from inside the park so had no clue. I do not know if the trails to thr right or left of "Pima RD - National" trails were closed as well but I needed Desert Classic Train to get home.

Also saw this rail between cars and a sidewalk ... only one of the rails with this level of deformation. Will have to ask a park ranger later.

Anyone big on mountain bikes willing to help out someone getting back into the game with making good decisions?

Ive got a 10 year old rockhopper that is in good shape... other than gears are shot and forks need to be rebuilt

Am I better off getting it fixed, or buying a new one?

Looking to have something to took around with the kids, do a little rehab, and explore the local area, but nothing hardcore

How much are you looking to spend?

If you're not looking to do anything hardcore, pick up a used hybrid.

You can buy a brand new hybrid for that. I would visit local shops, I'm assuming they still haven't bounced back and with it being summer I bet their trying to move stock.

sorry I am ignorant, what do you mean by hybrid?

I think i would want at least front shocks, which is why I was still thinking rockhopper or similar

1000%. A 1x drivetrain alone is worth getting something modern.

Not a fan of Specialized, but it looks like a decent hardtail. I am a big fan of reconditioning the old vs buying new...

For a $1K budget, you could replace with a 1X drivetrain and even the fork. A rebuild isn't that difficult, or expensive if a shop does it...
