hmm, that was my initial temptation, as the bike has some sentimental value

but i dont want to have to keep dumping money into it

Best bet is to have a trusted and competent LBS look at it and give you an honest assessment of repairs based on your needs...

    @Atl-atl may have a recommendation

If they can install a 1x drive, I would definitely ask what it was cost to rebuild everything. After riding 1x I could never go back to front derailleur.

Have you looked into Giant? They have good bikes and that was my old one. Bought it for $1500 but that was back in 2014. It was a full suspension, I know you’re looking for a hardtale.

    Kona makes decent bikes too.

Pretty sad news about the youtuber couple behind the channel ToyotaWorldRunners.
You may have seen them from this Toyota Chinook they built and took on a roadtrip across the Americas from Canada to Argentina.
They both passed away in a single vehicle accident offroad over the weekend.

Reminder for everyone to stay safe out there, things can go south real quick.

Fucking tragic, my heart hurts for their family. They seemed like genuine people and that Chinook was badass.

I made the mistake of sharing this with Amber so I might be solo on the next few trips…

Yeah heard about this and checked out their Pan-American trip video. Great vibe to their video with the cinematography and editing.

@Twitch57 I have essentially a whole bike shop in my garage in Flag. If you want to bring the bike over Im happy to spend a little time on it to see if its salvageable for little to no money. Free.99 or a bottle of whiskey or whatever.

FWIW, 4 years ago I purchased a Trek Marlin 7 at Landis for $750. Hardtail but front shock fork that can be locked if you want. Front and back hydraulic disk brakes (not mechanical disk brakes). 1x10 drivetrain for easy shifting without guessing the next combination ... and I agree you will not want to return to a front deralieur. Funky orange/red color.

Maybe that exact model is not what you want, but you can get much for less than $1000.

On the repair angle ... swap the front bracket bearings if needed, and the front/rear angles I hope would be able to handle a 1x setup, just an adjustment to the rear derailer travel limits. The investigation should be fun if nothing else ... with the beer to help out.

Ahh yeah I forgot, you moved to Prescott didnt you? Well Im happy to help if you want to bring it up this way. You can drop it at my house any time. Unfortunately I dont have plans to be in Prescott any time soon. I will be driving from Flag to Phoenix this Sunday and then back probably on Monday evening. If you want to meet me at the Pilot in Cordes Junction or something like that.

With all the bike talk, I thought it was funny this video just dropped from one of my favorite Tubers.

Also, a damn shame for the Yota adventure couple, their families, and the community.

At the risk of being morbid, some insight into what happened. Sounds like a pretty bad roll over with an ejection.
