What is the normal coolant temps for a 2nd gen 4.0l?

Did a road trip over the weekend and saw temps from 190-204 on my ultra gauge. With outside temps of 95-106. Speeds anywhere from 60mph to 80mph. Cruising around town temps are anywhere from 186-196.

Are these all normal temps or should I be concerned?

Depends on the thermostat rating. Most in our Tacos are rated at 180. That’s when it starts to open. Your #s resemble mine.

When's the last time you replaced your radiator cap?
My stock 06 4.0 stays between 183-186. Most of the time right at 185.

Would the radiator cap make a difference?

I have tested and my temps are about the same. between 190 - 205 when on highway, little bit less in traffic

Yes they are a wear item.

(I replace mine every 5 years. A $5 radiator cap is cheap maintenance. I usually buy Gates.)

I peaked at 203 towing in 90* heat. Sounds like I'm in the 'ballpark' and will stop looking at the gauge.

    minor tweaks
Those temps look pretty typical to me, out here in the high desert if it's cool out the coolant stays very close to 186. In the summer heat (95~104F) it stays between 186~195, when pulling a small trailer it'll creep up a couple degrees 198 on the hills. Driving in death Valley last aug in 118F it crept up to 205, highest I've seen it go.

My truck floats between 186 to 190ish on a hot day. Your temps sound perfect.
