You're leaving out half of the info.. 285/75 or 285/70? 16 or 17" wheels?

    You sure about that?

Finding wheels with the same specs between a 16 and 17 was less common than expected. So if you consider the average 17" wheel is 8.5 or 9" width it'd be heavier most of the time where as my 16's is looked at were 8" in kmc's catalog

285/75/16 KO3s in C load are the only non E I see on Tire rack. Interestingly though when I was comparing weights even the E load on a 16in wheel comes out lighter than the lighter 285 17in AT options on a 17in wheel since the 17in wheels generally weight a good bit more.

285/7017s Toyo open country AT3s SL rated. They are I think the lightest and one of the best rated all terrain tires. I have them on the TRD SEMA wheelsIMG_2538.jpg

The BFGs in an E rated weigh in at about 60 pounds and the Toyo at3 is Sl weighs 46 pounds.

Thanks man. 285/70 SL rated sounds like a nice option that you 17" owners have at 46lbs.

Some in this thread just can't follow along with the difference of SL weights vs E load weights and that 16" tires have more weight due to the tire height not the microscopic width/ratio on matching sizes of different wheel sizes.

    Yeah.
Not sure I am following this. A 285/70 in either 16 or 17 has the same tread width and sidewall height, but the 17" is larger in diameter and circumference. I haven't checked weights, but if the 16" is heavier than the 17" in the same tire size, that is due to differences in design or materials.

He's trying to imply that since a 16" tire has more sidewall so they weigh more than a 17" which is not wrong but you also need to account for the difference in wheel weight aswell which ends up making it basically a wash between the 2 when compared apples to apples.

To compare them side by side a 285/75r16 is used next to a 285/70r17 to reach the same diameter

You're missing part of the point.. find me an SL rated 285/75/16.

    It doesn't exist.

That's cool none of the tires I want to run are available in an SL to. There's not many 285 SL's your now comparing apples to oranges. I am not.

Also an SL spec 285 has substantially less tread than an E load

Heh.. this thread is off the rails. What started out as a conversation about performance and tire size/weight FOR 16" wheels has turned into people interjecting their $0.02 about some random 17" tire BS. unwatched. have fun.

Sure seems like it was a discussion about E load tires not 16" tires. If your so upset you can't get an SL tire in a 16 might be time to get a 17" wheel

Well you are half right - the OP did start out with he wanted 33s 285/75R16 so that is about 16" tires. But, yeah, he then expressed concern abut E rated tires and that opened the proverbial can of worms. I mean since the OP later mentioned he does a lot of highway driving and only some off road stuff a few times a year he probably does not need E rated tires. But who knows maybe he does the Rubicon and Moab and that is his two times a year going off road. But just for discussion sake lets say his few times a year off road is light off road stuff. Then yeah I can see where it would make more sense to go with a 17" wheel/tire combo. OP did mention he wanted to change up his wheel look so why not a 17." I mean for me I think he already has some nice 16" TRD Pro wheels . . . . If I were him I would just run some SL 32s 265/75R16 on those great looking TRD Pro wheels - a little fatter and fills up the fender well a little better and a tad bigger than the 31s and a tad smaller than 33s - Wildpeaks would nice but there are some others like Toyo. But hey that's just me, he wants 33s and different wheels so . . . . . .

    Yeah.
OK yeah, to get the same diameter you would have more sidewall. I thought he was saying that a 16" 285/75 was heavier than a 17" 285/75, which doesn't make sense.

Anyway, he's kind of right -- the OP started the conversation implying he was going to stick to the OEM wheels, which are 16". He was given some feedback about load ranges, and the thread devolved into a load range discussion. OP did mention he might swap out wheels, and if he does that it would be wise to go to a slightly wider 17" wheel to open up more options unless he's set on skinnies.

When going skinnies, most options are E-rated and have a mud terrain tread. Great for offroading and if your Taco is not a daily driver. Only option in C is a Falken A/T tread, better if you daily it.

The BFG KO3 is the only thing you can get in a C-rated 285/75R16. The rest are E.

I run E because that was the only option at the time, and I want the added peace of mind when on a rocky shelf road at 12k feet. When I stop doing that kind of stuff, I'll likely replace with C if they are available.
