Is it better/worse than OEM Toyota?

Should I be looking at another cover?

Are you finding them reasonably water tight?
(I recognize there are areas outside of the cover obviously still allowing water in)

Do you already have an oe cover? If so what don't you like about it and has you looking into a new cover?

I have had an mx4 for a few years now and it's been alright. I'd expect a bit more for the price.

Pros is fully flips up and can be removed very easily. Installs super easy and it's very low pro compared to the oe cover

    Cons cost and overall quality.
I hammer my truck down back roads alot and I have lost bits of trim off the cover it's still fully usable but the corner pieces have been gone for over a year.

I don't think your going to find a cover remotely water tight. The mx4 has drains built into the rails which helps but it still bleeds past the rail edge. So it heavily reduces it but definitely doesn't keep it all out.

If you can score a deal on one it's a good cover but at full retail I'm sure there's a cheaper offering that will do the same thing.

I was going to ask the same thing because Realtruck just came out with their next generation version and was wondering if anybody got one yet as I need one.

I just removed a SmartCap that's been on it since the truck was 30 days old.

I no longer had a need for a shell and wanted to be able to occasionally use the bed for things larger than the shell would allow.

That said, keeping things protected and out of sticky fingers would be my real *need*, keeping stuff mostly dry is secondary. A nicety but not a requirement.

Is the Bakflip what i should be looking at, or are their others just as good if not better?

Have had mine on my 2021 since I bought the truck new.
After 4 years I'm still happy with it.

I lost the little corner pieces too ( per @Veet-88 ) but I contacted them and they sent me a set for free.

I've got one - it's my second Bakflip. Had the X2 originally that rolled up, but I beat the crap out of it for ~6 years and decided to go with the tri-fold MX4 as a replacement. It's been great and I would get one again. Not water proof, but you can find where it's leaking and seal it up yourself and get it pretty close.

My extang solid fold 2.0 was water tight. It’s a shame they updated the design slightly

Never had an OE one so can't comment on that. I had a Retrax at one point and now the 2nd gen MX4 from Realtruck. The MX4 leaks, the side of my bed is always full of water after a good rainfall. So I never keep anything in there anymore. I am going to blame the rail at the front of the bed as its not level and sits like a 1/4" inch tall so that seems to be where the water is coming from.

    I do, its OK.

Thats what I currently run and love it. It can be pretty water tight with some adjustments to the drain holes in the bed. I never bothered with it tho. @GotExhaust could maybe get you a deal as thats who I went with on this forum.

My story exactly. Had the X2 on my ram, sold the ram and got the Tacoma. Had the MX4 on the Tacoma until I upgraded to a shell from ARE simply because I needed more storage. I really loved the MX4 and I used it a lot. I agree with the quoted stuff about water tightness as well.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Never had the OE but nearly every one I see looks horrible with solar fade and the hinge rubber cracked. I bought my Extang 2.0 used and though faded a bit, looks pretty close to when I bought it. Same with MX4 and others; they seem to hold up way better.

My Mx4 is over 7 year's old. As stated above scratches easily. I had the first flaps plastic break and had to purchase a new rail to just replace the opening mechanism at the tailgate. It leaks only a little on the sides which doesn't seem to be a problem. I never had a stock one but I am sure bakflip is better and more durable. Other problems or complaints are some of the rivets rusted while others didn't. One prep rod always falls off after some time. Not a big deal and I could lock tight it to stop that. I would probably purchase again as it is easy to use the entire bed while hauling.

I have the Bakflip MX4 and love it. Major plus is that it flips all the way back. It's not waterproof though. I sealed all the way around with Black Silicone and now it's about 98% waterproof. In a hard rain, a tiny bit still gets in from somewhere...

Thanks for all the replies - good comments.

It sounds like the MX4 is decent, though high end of pricing for what you get. I guess my next step is to shop around for the best price or find a good used one.

I have it. My truck and the cover are both approaching 10 years old. It's been solid. Like others have said, it's not completely waterproof. And I do have to lube the latching mechanism every couple years, but no regrets.

I appreciate the offer, but much to far to make sense.

I have a quote for a new (Apparently new 3rd generation) MX4 for $1083 OTD - seems like a solid quote for new.

If my options were that or a used for $600, is the extra money with the piece of mind that all the seals and hinges are new?!
