OEM Toyota Molle Panels

The OEM Toyota Molle Panels for the 4G are nice because they mount BEHIND the rails.

The hardest part of this install was the RIVNUT. If you’ve dealt with these you know they can be a pain unless you have a Snap On account. For us regular guys, you can literally make a RIVNUT tool (pictured) and luckily the Tacoma bed has lots of access to grab the RIVNUT so it doesn’t start spinning to its doom (totally cheating haha).

No offense but I struggle with molle panels for what they cost not to mention I can feel my OCD going overdrive not being able to clean behind them ROFLOL! However I cant stop lusting over that bed mounted compressor and deck slide!!!
And most of nailers are battery powered now! #stupidrivnuts

 

I’m getting ready to install an AluCab on the bed so that will help keep the dust down

 

I have always liked the AluCabs. What are you getting, an AluCab camper or shell?

 

The Contour canopy. I had one on my last truck and it was bomb proof. The Molle panels will be a nice upgrade this go around.

 

those are sweet. i’d love to mount some tools on those like my small axe.

Sounds like I have the identical truck , 24 trailhunter 6 ft bed. I also have a alucab contour installed on the truck. I would like to get the side Molle panels for my bed. You mentioned you were getting a Alu contour canopy, have you installed it yet? Any issues with mounting the canopy clamps with the Molle panel behind the bed rails?

When I put a side step rail on my truck I had to install some large diameter rivnuts. This worked well enough for me:

It was $56 when I bought it, but now its $51. I got that tool instead of long handled squeeze type because it works better in tight spaces. When I was under the truck, those long handled ones wouldn't have fit as well. Also the mandrel went up to an M12 size. Really wish there was a tool library where I could just borrow one. They don't rent these at auto stores, and TBH the rental tools I've gotten from Napa or Advance have been pretty clapped out. I appreciate the cheap rivnuts you get in the kit because while they're pretty worthless for anything robust, they are nice to practice with.

 

I bought the same one sort of for the same reasons, so I could put in the rivnuts for my OEM Molle panels. I used the rivnuts that came with the panels, which are different that most rivnuts I've seen. The threaded rod that screws into the rivnuts doesn't engage enough threads because the Toyota provided rivnuts have a longer crush-zone — the distance from the top of the nut to where the threads start before the nut is compressed is larger than typical — and it tends to want to tear out when you start compressing. I was able to clean up the threads, then took off the threaded collar on the tool that normally bears against the nut collar and used a fender washer in its place to get the threaded rod to engage more threads on the nut. Configured like that, I was able to install the rivnuts just fine.

Just be aware that you may have to get kind of creative.
