I've got a boomer in the office this morning who we gave a new laptop too, she wanted a lighter machine, so I gave her a Dynabook and took back her Dell Precision....

She's from Florida, she's got hair so blonde it's brighter than the sun, she's wearing the pinkest beach dress you've ever seen, her skin looks like a catcher's mitt, and her perfume is so overbearing, I have a migraine the size of California.

If that's not enough she wants me to set up literally every setting in her Outlook.

I'm not saying corporate life is a young man's game, but I'm sayin it's a young man's game.

    Model railroader :^D

My cousin works for CP, he's an engineer and runs from Milwaukee to Minneapolis daily. If I was younger I'd consider that field.

Well, I used to jump trains behind my friend's house when I was a teenager. When I was younger still, I had a model train, not sure what scale, it was fun for a while but didn't develope into a lifelong passion.

Anyone ever have an employee/coworker who never quite understood when to NOT stir the shit? The kind that would say something every time they felt inconvenienced, and never make the connection that they only added more work for themselves?

How do I tell them, dude, every time you fire off an pissy email, there's a secret meeting held with upper management and HR about it, a new procedure is written in response, and now you and everyone else on your team have extra hoops to jump through every time you want to take a leak. And now you want to open your yap about that again? You aren't scoring the valid argument that you think you are. You're hurting yourself, you idjit.

I got one of those on my crew. At least I'm getting an education in people skills. There's that.

Ya it's funny, the technical part or the job itself is easy, the politics is the part that blows goats. Some places it is worse than others. Some places there's more micromanagement than others. My last boss was a micromanager. Because his boss was a micromanager. My new job, my boss is completely hands off to a fault. Where getting support is harder. So it's 1/2 doze or the other.

I had a coworker that was playing manager too. It's like MF, I've been doing this for 20 years, I know as much as you do, if not more.

That and sometimes hurts others too. Worked with a lady who came to my unit from a phone based area (no phones here). While we are allowed to use headphones and listen to music/podcasts, we aren't allowed to actually watch anything on our phones etc. She was also buddies on social media with a lot of the supervisors and was posting stuff like "love my new role, I get to watch TV shows all day while i work". I tried to tell her it could be an issue and she ignored it, next thing you know there's a big powwow about phone use. UGH

As a late boomer, I have the experience and wisdom to say that the spectrum of irritating people and clueless people isn’t confined to one generation. The opposite is also true and I have learned from “old people” and young people. There’s already a lot of wisdom and bullshirt in this thread so I’ll just quote one of my favorites from an old band, The Eagles: “so oftentimes it happens that we live our lives in chains and we never even know we have the key!” I didn’t say it would be easy to make a break btw. Contemplating quitting my job after 25 years because of my new (2 years) boss. The guy will absolutely not stay in his lane, constantly meddling and tweaking in every job and I cannot get anything accomplished. I've talked to him about it several times and even went over his head to the head of the company but it seems this guy is now the golden boy and can do no wrong. WTF!

Unfortunately that’s the biggest problem in lots of places . Some of these new people want to re invent the wheel and that looks good on paper with the bosses . But sometimes the higher up people have to look at what got the company to where it is .

Company “pets” are really company “pests” - for sure. The idea that someone gets favor for who they are and not what they do is nonsense.

I’ve worked in places where you can’t succeed - one place where the owner had Mercedes tastes and Ford pockets. Improving technology and the IT infrastructure was near impossible.

We used a MSP for my Level 3 escalations and network management. We were billing about $125,000 a year with them. I kept trying to get them to hire a sys admin or network admin for cheaper than that and they just wouldn’t do it. I would tell them having an in house body makes the person more accountable than a vendor.

    And its cheaper!

I later had my position eliminated and ended up at a better company making $91k vs $72k there.

    Everything happens for a reason.

Don’t stay at a company if the “best” it is going to be is “meh” or “average.”

The job market is pretty tough these days. I always have a certain kind of respect for people who can stick-it-out at a place, even when working conditions are miserable.

I've considered it if the right position came along. I had family members who did odd jobs for the railroad (plumber, accounting). The benefits are supposed to be good. The thought of being able to tour the lesser traveled places and the scenery is appealing.

I occasionally hear stories in the AZ news about railcars being broken into for Nike products and various electronics. Seems like an inside job.

Well I'm glad to see this thread is still going. I haven't checked it in a while. I just had a particularly crappy week. Same old same for me...we're always short people and I get to do two jobs. 34 years of seniority doesn't get you much. I have to eat shit from my arrogant boss who spends his day at the mini mart buying lottery tickets. My options are to keep doing this, or go back to night shift and take a really bad job, but I'd only have one job to do. I feel so defeated. I thought I was kinda smart, but nothing seems to work out the way I think it will.

I found out at 16 that retail wasn't the place to be, as soon as I could i went to trade school and got hired on as an electrical apprentice, loved it! Got my license in 3 years, traveled to states for 4 years, 13 years later still loving it!

Fair enough. Don't keep doing the job you hate, it'll ruin your outlook on life.
