Hey Guys, This is a First Diy On painting your chrome exhaust tips black. I haven't seen a diy on this yet so maybe this could be a sticky and help you guys out. This is a great mod to make your truck even blacker haha.

OK so the supplies you will need are:
    1. Scotch pads heavy duty.( There cheap like 6 for 3 bucks)
    2. I'm using high heat Primer and High heat black paint that goes up to 2,000 f so it wont flake off when exhaust gets hot.(Im doing 2 tips so I used 1 can of primer and 2 cans of black high heat. The paint is like 8.99 at autozone.
    3. Sand Paper. (You need 220 Grit and then 400 Grit.)

Now the tips I'm using came off of my old 07 Ram so As you can see in pic they were so dirty and couldn't even see the chrome.

First you want to get the scotch pads and really dig into the tips taking off all the road grime and rust off. Will take some pressure but it will come off. Use some water to help with the process.

Now the tips will look like this. All nice and clean.Took about 1 hour to get all the rust and stuff off the 2 tips.[IMG]

Now you want to clean them with soap and water. Then you want to take the sand paper, I use 220 first to really dig into the chrome and scuff it up so the paint bonds better. Make sure and wet sand and really sand the whole tip. Keep going over and over to really make it ruff up good. Then you want to use the 400 grit paper to smooth it out for primer.

Now you can wash the tips with soap and water again and make sure there dry. I was going to sit the tips up on table cause there round and need to go in circle to paint them lol but they kept falling so i use atv tie downs and chairs. Please do this outside. I did some inside and not good. shake up the can of primer real good for about 3 mins. Then do the coats. I did 4 coats to each tip going light to heavy.Wait 6 mins in between coats to make sure they dry. I did use the 400 grit sand paper and in between coats and lighty sand so the paint could have more grip. after 4 coats of primer, they should look like this. [IMG]

Now time for the paint high heat paint. I did again light coats and then some heavy ones at the end. I did about 6 to 7 coats. After the last coat, i took them off the tie downs and put them in my room. we had the heat on high so i closed the door and let them heat overnight. It says on can to put parts in oven but i didnt go do. They should look like this in the end. A more of a flat black then glossy but they came out amazing.

Ok so now off the the exhaust shop. I was getting dual flowmaster muffler 40 series out the side dual. It sounds really good and not to loud. [IMG]

Ok guys thats it. I was not a great painter, always messing up painting stuff on my trucks and cars but I have to say If a newbe can do this, then anyone can. It looks amazing. No flaking and nothing. I did this on friday so after 2 days its going good. I tryed to use my nail to take some of the paint off and couldn't. It is really on there good. Makes your exhaust custom. Thanks guys an any questions just ask.

Hey guys, I just wanna give you guys an update on how my tips are doing after 1 year. They still look great even after mudding and rain and salt that gets on them in the winter. I am going to spray them again just to make them shiny cause the color faded just alittle but besides that there great. I love em

Has anyone done this without the primer? Can't find the high heat primer anywhere so I'm just curious as to how well it will hold up minus the primer.

advance auto should cary the primer.. if not, home depot offers a high heat paint in rust-o-leum brand but it's only rated at 500º... not sure how hot are exhaust get but id honestly be surprised if it was anywhere near 500º!
