I whole heartedly agree about the gauge cluster on my '90 - all the pertinent info, right there!
I've thought more than once about scoring an old one, and then rigging something, probably with 3D printing, to get my oil and voltage up there!

I hear it’s reliable so I’m hoping that’ll be the case (no issues yet) but no, I haven’t put a tune on it yet, I’m thinking about it though.

pro: style and cab/bed configuration. it is a good looking truck. the access cab with 6 foot bed is about perfect. throw in the 6MT and, it can't get much better. i am happy with the performance and fuel mileage. not great, but good.

con: quality - fit and finish. i have squeaks and rattles and an oil leak.

as most on TW know, others have reported coolant leaks, burnt valves, acis flap failures, oiling issues on steep inclines, diff whine, water leaks, head unit goes dark, etc. we read these issues are very rare but, i don't know that anyone really knows. i don't believe oil leaks around the timing cover are rare.

this will likely hurt the feelings of some but, in five to ten years i suspect the 3rd gen will be known as the least reliable tacoma and used prices will reflect that. :crapstorm:

these are not the 200K mile toyota of old without major problems.

The overland tune is worth its weight in gold, it's not a want but a need for the 2.7! As far as reliability, there were two separate times in Moab I should've been stranded, but ol reliable pulled thru

Pro: versatile - road trips, off roading & hauling shit, does everything I need it to.

Con: Low power - climbing a mountain pass sounds like a screaming banshee.

No way! What reliability issues have you had? Sucks man sorry to hear that. Its usually the redeeming feature of these trucks

    1. I cannot shift into 4Hi or 4 Lo unless the ground I'm on is PERFECTLY level; any sort of incline or decline and it takes an act of Congress to get the truck to shift into 4WD.
    2. The transmission decided it was tired of working properly around 40 or 41K miles. Complete replacement; so far so good.
    3. The AC decided to shake me down by refusing to work in the middle of the first summer of ownership. We've come to an agreement; I occasionally recharge the system and it works. I've had several places look at it and no one can find the leak.
    4. Unless I speak highly of it when talking about my truck, the audio system hears me and decides to not work at random times. I've tried all but sacrificing a virgin on the tailgate to appease the audio gods.

    Those are the main things.

I think the days of the 200K mile Toyota truck stopped with the introduction of the turd Gen.

PRO: Bullet proof - I have 60K hard miles (I take it off road a lot) on it in 2.5 years and zero issues. It's lifted with extra weight (it's armored up) and bigger tires and it still holds up.

CON: the back seat of the Double Cab is useless
