Amanda’s PT Cruiser had a little parking lot tango with a 2014 Nissan Maxima. The older woman in the Maxima immediately took responsibility for the accident, and was freaked out because it had been her first accident in 50 years. The Maxima obvious got the worst of the damage, and we were planning to paint the bumpers black, so we’re not filing a claim. The damage seen near the right taillight was there when Amanda bought the car.

I was on break at work with five minutes left when I was talking to Amanda, while she brought my sunglasses to the optometrist to get repaired. We were actually talking when the woman hit her, and Amanda was like “she just hit me!”

At first I was thinking Amanda had gotten rear-ended, but she said she was sideswiped. The eyeglass place is less than minutes from my work, so I asked Amanda if she wanted me to come. Amanda said yes, and given the situation, my boss let me go.

Remember that Amanda’s car is 23 years old and has almost 100K miles, and that even though it’s probably worth $2,500-$3,000 at the highest, she only paid $800 for it and it’s far from being mint. I was initially worried that the car could be totaled based on age, mileage, and value: Amanda didn’t seem to the think the damage was bad, but could only tell me that it was on the rear bumper.

Amanda was stationary when the impact occurred, and the other woman took responsibility immediately. As stated above, we are just going to paint the bumper as originally planned. The woman is going to pay out of pocket to fix her Nissan, which only has 50K miles and is was in mint condition prior to the collision; I even gave her the contact info for the body shop that has fixed my truck numerous times!

 

The other lady's car got the worst of it.
It's nice to see you all played nice. No need to make a big deal out of it.
Some people would be really upset and make a huge deal out of it.
You and Amanda are good people. You handled the situation well.

I'd have done the same. I'd would have told the lady, "I hate that you got the worst of it".
And then carried on. Life is short, and as you said it's a 23 year old car.

Over the weekend, Amanda and I watched an old episode of Dr. G: Medical Examiner that was so eerily similar to Emily’s story I just had to share it. The deceased was a 36-year old woman who dropped dead on a city bus while commuting to work (Emily was 36).

She had been to the ER the night before and was misdiagnosed with bronchitis that ended up being a blood clot, which had been brewing for a while. A bunch of smaller blood clots had spread through her lungs and disguised themselves as bronchitis or a respiratory infection. A big blood clot formed in one her legs and hit her lungs, killing her pretty much instantly. She also had a seizure, as reported by other passengers on the bus.

We are not entirely sure if Emily had a seizure, but we suspect she did, and there was vomit around her body. We initially suspected that she’d barfed in her sleep, aspirated, and drowned on her vomit. The autopsy found nothing of the sort.

A key difference between Emily, and the woman on the show, is that Emily was morbidly obese and quite unhealthy while the woman was not. Emily was on birth control, and there’s a chance that could have caused the blood clot, but her other issues didn’t help things (I don’t remember if the woman from Dr. G was on birth control).

But yeah, an episode of a medical show from about 2008 really answered some questions about our friend’s death! I still hope to God that I never again
unexpectedly find a dead body…

 

Glad nobody got hurt, her car will definitely look way better with black bumpers.
