I read all the pages 3 times looking for the punchline. Man up, do what it takes to get the job done, think you would be the first in the Home Depot parking lot to pull out a step stool? Bad back here, figured out ways to pull stuff to the back of the bed if I have to, I can't get in the bed of any truck without a stool or ladder but I don't whine about it. Sure as hell wouldn't base my truck buying on it.

Please shred your man card (for whining)and politely ask the mods to delete your account.

Uh yeah, I think we'd all prefer the 620hp twin turbo v8, it's the price tag that stops us.

Starting to miss the good old days of Gen3, when people posted real complaints around here, not the first-world stuff. Why should the Tundra owners have all the fun?

Meantime, check back next week for the next chapter of “Piss Poor Design Friday”, where we discuss how the visor mirror doesn’t provide sufficient reflection coverage when flossing your teeth.

As much as we like to rag on this opinion, there is some truth to it.
Manufacturers seem to be overly fixated on certain niche markets and often forget about the everyday buyer.
Accommodations for off-roading, camping, and heavy utility are all good but the needs of the urban/suburban truck buyer are often overlooked.
Easier accessibility to a truck bed to me seems like a no-brainer as a designer. Same goes for having at least a grocery storage area on the truck without having to resort to a full tonneau or cap.
Toyota once had a concept SUV (FT-4X) that had cleverly built in areas for sleeping bags. flashlights and pull out boombox radio. Neat stuff, but how about making something with dedicated child car seats/strollers. Maybe bult in grocery coolers or even an integrated grocery/utility cart that can easilty be rolled into the store, docked into the truck and then rolled into your kitchen for unloading.
To me there seems to be too many missed innovation opportunities due to niche focus on off-roading/overlanding/camping.

Grocery bags, room for stroller, etc..you need a minivan, not a body-on-frame pickup truck.

This is exactly my point. I need a truck because I need a bed to haul stuff. But I also have a family and need to drive the thing everyday. Sure I dont need a body-on-frame pickup but aside from a maverick or Santa Cruz, what else are my options? And with the Maverick, for example, it starts out as a urban/suburban friendly truck. But you move up the trim levels and the options you get are largely just off-road stuff.

My point is, people who need a proper truck could also benefit from some everyday accessibility and convenience.

Jeez, heard them all, but this is a new one. The funniest part about it is that you joined the forum to create an engaging post. I'm laughing at all the responses.

Lariat and Lobo models aren't very off-roady but to speak to your point remember that most base/stock configs are aimed for on-road usage. As such, available upgrades/options will generally be off-road oriented.

Manufacturers generally only offer stuff they think will sell well enough to justify the costs to design, manufacture, and distribute. Would they sell enough units of a docking grocery cooler to justify it, or would most people just buy one of the myriad rolling coolers - some of which even plug in. I know you gave that just as one example, but the response applies to any of the other stuff.

OP's bumper gripe is a design trade-off. Does Toyota make the back end wider to accommodate having the existing step extend past the edge of the tailgate - which likely impacts wind drag and thus mileage, or do they make the bed and tailgate narrower - which impacts cargo width. Or do they offer an extendable bed step for those who want one?
