Manual transmission -- it is all about leverage.

The issue with towing in overdrive isn't about the engines ability to pull in those gears, it is about the side load on the gears in the transmission.

As the overdrive is speeding up the output shaft faster than the input shaft you are getting something for "free" if you will -- of course nothing is truly free. The mechanical advantage of that speed up is the issue, the transmission isn't as strong in overdrive as in the 1:1 ratio 4th gear.

Although not for our 6 speed the photos below illustrate the power flow in 4th gear and overdrive.

4th gear, direct drive, 1:1 ratio, see how the power flow is straight thru the main gearset = strong.

Overdrive gear, power flow through 4 gears and the countershaft = side load, the gears are trying to force themselves apart.

Obviously an automatic is built differently than a manual but the issue is the same, the overdrive section isn't as strong as the 1:1 ratio 4th gear section.

This said under light loads the overdrive gears can be used, one just needs to be more mindful and avoid lugging the engine.

    :sorry:
At least you are able to fix the problem yourself rather than pay a service call.

Surprising you didn't notice it during the attics weekly vacuum. :boink:

I didn't know that was a thing, pretty neat!

Out here on the dirt roads there is enough dust on the window to count as frosting for free. ;)

When I worked time was harder to come by than money so I frequently bought hardware knowing I already had it somewhere. When I retired I started gathering and organizing it in one place so now I can "go shopping" before a job and find most of what I need already in the archives.

Your (lack of) confidence in my picking abilities is duly noted -- and probably well deserved.

I was pretty busy yesterday so didn't take many photos. Absolutely knackered by the time I got home.

    Here is a teaser:

I wanna say Galaxy, but so many of Ford's cars back then had the same window line for the sides. Guess I'll have to wait.

At least the problem is pin point the first glance. I had my AC problem with the fan intermittent problem; welp, long story short it ended up the control board was changed after several attic trips, tried and error on different components :bananadead::laugh:

Funny you say that, I was explaining on my trip to the airport that it was a thing several years back to stick those around on pillars and outer walls to mess with low battery travelers having functional understanding difficulty.
