I have a 2002 Tacoma with automatic transmission that does not up shift when accelerating quickly. I have to stop and turn off ignition restart and and accelerate at slow speed then it up shifts normal. Looking for possible causes for this. I have wrenched for years but never on auto transmissions. Truck has 180,000 miles on it. don't know history on it. Thanks for any advice.

First thing I'd want to do is check for codes.

First off, check and make sure the ATF (originally dexII) is sufficient and not low after warming up.

Start with step 2 of the troubleshoot doc. As previously mentioned above, check that fluid. Beyond that, see the symptom pdf also attached. If any of it is beyond your confidence/ability level, seek professional assistance. Cheers.
