Seeing this thread last saw action 3 yrs. and 11 mos. ago, I am simply updating/clarifying the information for anyone who now owns a 2009 or later 2.7 L 4-cylinder Tacoma. I cannot speak for those who own an earlier model. The "Toyota Recommends" statements are directly taken from my manual.

Oil Used: Mobile 1 or Valvoline 100% Synthetic 0w-20
    - Toyota Recommends: "SAE 5W-20 or 0W-20 engine oil may be used. However, SAE 0W-20 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather."

Oil Quantity Used: 5 qts. (this quantity places oil within the "full" dimple/notch)
    - Toyota Recommends: Not Provided; however, Toyota does state, "The approximate quantity of oil needed to raise the level between low and full on the dipstick is indicated as follows: 2.7 L 4-cylinder (2TR-FE) engine 1.4 qt. (1.3 L, 1.1 lmp. qt.)"

Miles Between Changes: 5,000 (what I'm comfortable with; I notice zero negatives)
    - Toyota Recommends: Not Provided
    - John Doe Recommends: From 3,000 to 15,000, I have heard it all. When I lived in AZ, I changed it every 3,000 or so due to all the fine sand.

Note: I check my oil level either before I turn the vehicle on or 10 minutes after I turn it off. In both situations, the oil has drained into the reservoir where the dipstick takes the measurement. Both tactics are recommended by multiple oil companies...Mobil being one of them. Seems to make a lot of sense too. Running the engine and checking the level during or shortly after turning it off does not take into account the oil within the system.

I’m having this same issue. I looked online and my 2001 2.7 says 5.8qts but I put 5qts in and ran it 10min turned it back off for 25min and checked the dipstick and it says it’s on the “F” Line. The have ocd real bad so I made sure I’m on level ground and even used a factory Toyota Genuine Parts Engine Oil Filter, 90915-YZZD1 and it still say it. Why is this ? I know the dipstick is a genuine Toyota dipstick that came in it factory. I ain’t slept right in 2 nights cause I’m worried this fuckers gonna have issues now with not enough oil.

    Welcome to TW.
I don’t think there’s any reason to worry. You have enough oil in there. As long as the dipstick is showing as full, you’re good.

I probably don’t but it still bugs me because it should hold 5.8qts and I know 100% I didn’t put that much in. I’m gonna go to Toyota and talk to them Monday and try to figure out this

When I first got the truck I put 6 in (what the manual said). It was over full. Now I put 5.5 quarts. I save the half quart for the next oil change.

Easy: all of the old oil didn't come out (never does on any vehicle)

im a pretty sure I get 99% of it out. I even go as far as to let drain out and then get a floor jack and jack the front of it up about 2 and half feet up to make sure it doesn’t have any sitting in the front part of the pan.

If you want to create a headache about this, go ahead, but I'm 99% if the oil is at the right level on the dipstick (or really anywhere near it), you're fine.

Did you measure the oil that came out, and notice that it is not 5.8 qts either?

How much of the 6 qts is sitting in the pan? I always found it odd these small engines calling for so much oil compared to some larger engines that require less.

I’m not trying to create anything I’m trying to get accurate answer to my question I asked. It makes no sense why it says a 3RZ/2.7L holds 5.8qts and I can only put 5qts before it says it’s full ? If you have any better of an idea then saying I still had almost an entire quart of oil still sitting in the pan I’m all ears but that simply isn’t the case. If you have a 3RZ/2.7L I would challenge you to go look at the oil pan on it and notice how the drain plug area sits lower so it can drain out completely. A few moths back I replaced the oil pan seal and when I took it off the pan was completely empty and was not holding any extra oil that would make up almost a complete quart.

Oil levels are approximate, things puddle up and slosh around, it's not an exact science in there.

Owners manual aside, the space between the marks on the dipstick is called the safe zone for a reason. If the oil is reading between those 2 marks then you will not cause any damage related to underfilling. Period. It can't happen. You'd have to drive upside down to starve the engine of oil

The dealer will not go down this rabbit hole with you, they'll just try to sell you a new truck

    Relax

I have a 2.7 2008 and always just put in 5 quart jug of Walmart Synthetic - I fill the filter first and lube the filter seal with the oil - so 17 years and no problem - dip stick looks good to if any of this helps.

had oil change with a bunch of other maintenance at a trusted shop that specializes in toyota/lexus. They put 5.5 quarts in and its right at full mark on dipstick. their interval is 6,000 miles

For 60 years every Toyota owners manual has stated the dipstick IS THE BOSS - the ultimate authority. The 3rd gen 2.7 takes 5 1/2 quarts to bring the oil level up to the Full mark after an oil pan drain and filter change.
