OK, then. So you agree that it isn't as good as the 2nd gen or 4th gen powertrains. When I heard the copious complaints about the 2016, I hunted down one of the last 2015s on the lots. Glad I didn't have to go through those model change growing pains.

OP, I am 60 yo, I have an artificial hip, bad Back and messed up shoulder. All the pickup beds I climb into are a challenge. I have a Ford F350 in addition to my 25 Tacoma. I have also had experience climbing into other brands of full and midsize trucks. The Tacoma is easier than most. We all reach a point where we can’t spring up into a truck bed like we once could. Be it age, physical limitations or being overweight. You have two options, buy something different that eliminates the climb or find a way to adapt. I choose the latter. I can always find a way to climb up in the bed of any truck. It might not be pretty but I refuse to give up. I have a bed step and it works well. I had a Westin foldable bed ladder in my previous Tundra and it worked really well. It’s now on my F350. Life sometimes throws challenges at you. You have to decide if you want to give up and complain or fight back, overcome and take the win. Good luck!

I have one of those double-length milk crates that I picked up on the side of the interstate in the middle of nowhere one time. It's deeper than a normal one as well. It rides in the bed most of the time. Four years and thousands of miles and hasn't flown out yet. Perfect step.

It's always great to hear a well-thought-out, articulated review.

It really sucks having to drive to the gas station where I am tall enough to get in the bed all the time.

My son-in-law bought the VW equivalent to this...it's "Sporty!"

They have a Black Lab and travel 50 miles to visit us so the extra storage works out great!

He's never owned a truck...but is amused by mine...and the stories I tell him about TW. lol

I'm 5'7" but shrinking slowly...in last year of my 50s...since June.

I use the rear tires to get in the bed on the side...and with my bilateral knee replacements, can still jump on the gate when I need to.

    Dear Toyota,

We, the American Truck buyers, have been bitching, moaning, and exclusively buying vehicles that are ever higher off the ground.

We not only demand enough ground clearance that we need steps for the cab and bed, we want enough headroom above our heads that we can wear top hats on our way to the opera.

We want to be taller than everyone else on the road so we can see over them. Never mind the fact that we still can’t see because every vehicle is just as tall and covered with black tint that can’t be seen through.

We still aren’t happy about the lack of height, so don’t stop making everything bigger and don’t stop putting ever more massive and ugly grills on everything.

However, we are unhappy that we can’t reach anything anymore.

Please make the truck kneel when we wish to enter the cab or use the bed.

Please make the truck continue to tower over everything in the parking lot at the Walmart.

We only want it to kneel when we wish to board so no one gets the idea that we are practical.

    Your’s faithfully,

    Goldilocks

thanks for all the feedback (well most all of it). I'm not old or inflexible (crossfit addiction to blame for that), just commenting that ingress/egress shouldn't be compromised for tiny aesthetic or aerodynamic improvement. looked at an early 70's J-series Jeep Truck today - no problem hopping in the bed using the ear of the step bumber that extended beyond the body (horrors!)

Y'all enjoy your forum and make each other feel good, not a super-friendly place. I won't be back

Actually sorry to hear this. There are a lot of very friendly, helpful people on the board. People who also aren't afraid to poke some fun. Sometimes it helps to have thicker skin.

Your only experience is the couple of posts in this thread. Harden the fuck up and look around.

I’ve heard a lot of complaints of the Tacoma over the years but this is definitely one of the more odd ones

I've gotta ask: What cave have you been hiding in? Every aerodynamic advantage goes right to fuel mileage. A lot of compromises are made these days in the name of fuel mileage. You can thank .gov for that. There are a lot of things I'm sure Toyota (and others) would do differently if their wallets weren't held hostage by CAFE.
