Yesterday, Amanda and I drove by one of my many childhood homes. This one was built in 1996, and my parents bought it from the original owners in 1998 for somewhere in the range of $150K-$160K. We lived there until 2000, and my parents barely broke even when they sold it. Today, it is worth almost $520K according to Zillow. The owner happened to come outside and we chatted a little bit; she told me they’ve been there for about a decade, so it’s changed hands a few times, but the exterior has remained largely unchanged since we lived there…

 

I attended Christopher Farms Elementary from 1998 to 2000 (4th and 5th grade). My old school is like a mile from the house…

 

My aunt and uncle live in this beautiful, resort-like community in Norfolk; I have never driven my truck down here before, and I just assumed that they wanted me to park on the street. The green house behind my truck is theirs. Only after parking the truck and going inside did I find out that my aunt left the driveway clear just for me...

As of this post, my truck has been to (or at least through) the following states, and this does not include Pennsylvania because I live there. Here they are in alphabetical order...

• Delaware

The furthest north it has been is the suburbs of Rochester, NY. The furthest south it has been is Poplar Branch, NC.

 

I have also driven in the following states, including the ones my truck has been to, but not always in my truck (and not counting Pennsylvania because I live there...

Amanda has been obsessed with Grave Digger since childhood, and before our trip I discovered that Digger's Dungeon was less than hour from where my various family members live! We took a quick jaunt over the state line in North Carolina this afternoon which, as stated above, is the absolute farthest south I've ever driven my truck as of this post!

We were originally going to stay through Monday, then my mom convinced us to come home on Sunday. After all, my grandma was coming up from Florida and my cousin who we were staying with was also going up to PA. Then, it turned out that my grandma was not coming. We wanted to stay an extra day, but staying with either my cousin or my aunt and uncle was out of the question because they were both leaving super early.

I am obviously not a veteran, but I am still my dad’s dependent, and my privilege card grants me access to all US military bases! Amanda and I spent the night at the Navy Inn at Norfolk for just $99!

If I get married, I lose my insurance and all the other perks of being the son of a 20+ year veteran. Before reconnecting with Amanda, I really wasn’t living in the real world. The insurance thing is a big part of why I haven’t gone out on my own. My current job has insurance, but it is obscenely expensive. Now that Amanda is in my life, the prospect of having to get my own insurance and other stuff doesn’t seem so bad.

I am REALLY going to miss the life of a Navy Brat when we do get married, though!
