    Yeah, I concur with your observations regarding E load tires. There are so many trade-off's with E-load. If you are hardcore off-roading, rock crawling, airing down real low, trail blazing and you are worried about sidewall cuts, and tire punctures by all means go for it. However, the majority of us daily drive, long summer road trips and grind away in city traffic, a good SL makes most sense. Living in the PNW I need good wet weather traction along with some snow performance. E loads struggle in that department due to the harder rubber compounds. I'm looking to replace my current Toyo OC AT3's SL this fall and will be looking at a continuing with a highway A/T in a SL load. The SL's will most likely wear faster than the E Loads tho.

This initially wasn't my first choice in tire to be honest, but the ones I wanted were all just too heavy or aggressive (came down to these or Baja Boss). But, I am happy with them now that I actually have them. Not too heavy, not too aggressive, not too noisy, not too harsh, not too expensive..

    People run 265 75 16 on stock all of the time with no rubbing. It shouldn't matter what tire you pick in that size.

    265/75/16 S/T Maxx 16X8.5 Level 8 Trackers 5100 1.75 HID, LED interior, 3" N-Fab step bars
    On stock rims, most say no, but some have reported rubbing when turning and hitting a small bump (like turning into your driveway). And this is even with removing both set of front mud flaps. Any wider than stock rims or different offset...will 100% rub when turning and/or hitting bump. Any front lift or leveling with 5100s will resolve this.

    Are you still happy with these tires? I just bought a set of those same wheels (except it's the black ones) and I'm trying to decide to go with the falkens in the 255 or or some toyo rt trails in a 285. My commute to work is only 12 miles round trip and I try to wheel at least once a month. So it's hard to not buy the more aggressive tire. But I also really want the tall skinny 255 but not a mud terrian level of aggressive. In the past I've had the Falken at3 and the toyo at3. I loved the Falken and didn't like the toyo as much. So that's my dilemma. Haha

    Yeah, I'm still very happy. That said, life has gotten in the way of me driving my truck much, or at least not how I'd like to be driving it. It's not my daily so I only drive it once a week to keep the fluids moving around and otherwise it gets used for random hauling and camping/adventures. Unfortunately, I haven't had time for adventuring since I got these tires :(

    It's hard to make a choice like you have in front of you since you're looking at two different sizes AND two different tires. Personally, I'd try to figure out what your most important thing is and then go from there. Here are a few things I'd be considering if it were me:
    • Falken is a tiny bit lighter and a good bit narrower. You might, I stress, 'might' have a better chance at capturing better mpg with the Falken.
    • Toyo is an E load and has ~50% more load capacity
    • Based on the above, I would guess the Falken will be more comfortable than the Toyo (softer sidewalls). This may be better offroad too if you get more deformation of the tire over uneven surfaces.
    • Based on the above, hauling/towing heavy stuff is a concern then the Toyo may be a better option.
    • Based on the above many will tell you the Toyo will be more durable offroad. I wouldn't blindly trust that advice, the AT4 is very, very robust.
    • Falken is a tiny bit taller
    • Falken has a better chance of not rubbing or rubbing less

    Before I had my Falkens I had Yokohama G008 255's and liked them at first but they got loud quickly and didn't wear very evenly. Maybe I had a bad experience but the lesson I learned is that I don't think I need MT's and that an AT is the best tire for me. I might consider a hybrid like the RT in the future but for now I'm pretty settled on aggressive AT's being the best category for me, personally.

    Thank you. That's a good perspective. I had mickey thompson baja legend (rt) type tire and they did start chopping and wearing unevenly even though i did rotate regularly. So you make a good point on that. I'd hate to spend over a grand on tires (they've gotten so expensive) now and have a crappy on road experience after a while. If the falkens aren't aggressive enough and get me stuck I do have a winch. If the skinnier does get me a touch better gas mileage that would be a plus too.

    Anyone ever seen anything like this?

    5000 miles on my 255/80R17 Falken Wildpeak AT4Ws. Went to rotate the tires yesterday and discovered this ~5 inch split diagonally across the main tread. This tire was the right rear and it is holding air. Given it was the rear, the diagonal pattern makes it seem very unlikely I ran over something. I could potentially envision a slice like that on a front wheel when turning, but that is not the case, nor do I have any memory of running over anything that could have done this. Only road miles so far. Also, it doesn't look to me like someone slashed it because you can see the tips of the crack are propagating as the rubber splits.

    The split also is perfectly linear and the exact same width as the cut siping and grooves in the tread. Definitely seems like a manufacturer defect - or at least I'm hoping it will be warrantied - so planning to head to the shop I bought these from tomorrow. Seems very odd though....and not to mention concerning if this IS a defect.

    I know this is an old post, but did you ever take an actual measurement of the height and width of these after they were mounted? Would you go E rated again? Or would you go SL?

    I've only had these on my truck for two days now, but I've already fallen in love with them. They ride like butter down the highway and the wet traction tested today was excellent. They also seem to be a tad larger than the BFG KO2s that I had on before. The AT4Ws look amazing with the SEMA wheels, the pictures of these tires online don't do them justice. I went with the 265/70r17 in SL load and I'm very happy I did. I was torn between these and the KO3s but in the end I wanted to try something different, and these are very highly rated.

    Another SL vs C/E load perspective:
    I have a Sequoia and started with the A/T4W in an SL load. It rode super smoothly with no road noise. I would have kept them, but they looked too small on the Sequoia. I went up one size and tried both the A/T4W C load and Toyo AT3 E load. I drove them all on the exact same roads. The A/T4W C load was almost as quiet as the SL load, however it made the ride rough, the acceleration sluggish, and the weight was noticeable when braking. There was also an annoying wobble above 65 mph. The AT3 E load was almost as smooth as the A/T4W SL and the handling was not noticeably different. The ride may be a bit rough, but it’s tough to notice. As far as MPG goes, the SL got close to 20mpg, the C load got 15.5 mpg, and the AT3 E load got 18 mpg. If they had a bigger A/T4W SL I would have gone that route, but I went with the AT3 E load as it drove much better than the A/T4 C load.

    I'm looking at getting these tires in the 255/85 16 size and was hoping to get y'alls option if ill need a CMC.

    Suspension: Dirt King 2.0 kit with Dirt King upper control arms. The coilovers are set at 2" in the front and I have 1" block in the rear.

    Wheels: 16x8 0 offset.

    I figured I would have to do some trimming, but was hoping to avoid the CMC. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Can anyone tell me about the "XL" load rating for the Falken Wildpeak 255/70R16 115T XL? I want to get Falken Wildpeak AT4Ws in 255 (skinny) and it looks like this is my only option if I use my 16" 3rd Gen Five spoke 4Runner Rims. Is that right? Honestly I wish I could just get another set of AT3Ws but it looks like I missed the boat. I liked how quiet and mostly smooth the tires felt on the road. Are the XLs more stiff or anything I should know before going the 255 route? Should I consider 245s?

    Just went from 265/75R16 AT3W to 255/85R16 AT4W. Shop said i could get away without a CMC on the OEM wheels I was fitting (around +10 to +13 offset) but that I should CMC and remove mud flaps to ensure full clearance when stuffing the wheels on a turn or hard corner bump offroad (which i do often). Since you have lower offset number than i did I would assume you'll have even more concerns with wheel scrub radius and clearance in that area, bearing in mind I had adjustable UCAs that allowed for more clearance adjustment too. I'd say it really depends on how hard you offroad or hit bumps and turn hard.

    Had the AT4Ws fitted just last week. Going from AT3Ws I do notice the power lower when hard accelerating or giving power going uphill, and that the truck likes to downshift to 5th faster from 6th when cruising when I ask for a slight acceleration when on the highway. Narrower tires seem to be helping offset the weight some though, turning/steering might be slighter faster than with the 265s.

    Overall the lower performance isn't too bad without a regear (slightly more power and much better shifting behaviors) with a tune and manifold spacer (give up some top end HP for a bit more low RPM torque to help with highway cruising in overdrive and managing weight). Stree driving feels similar, just with a bit more propensity to downshift quickly to accelerate. I don't feel the need for a regear currently for drive-ability, but have a suspicion that may eventually happen regardless after some time goes by.

    Offset is about perfect, the chunkier C loads 255s are very similar in total width to the SL load 265s and with different wheels but about the same offset as the TRD pro Wheels the TRD "Beadlocks" about perfectly line up with the OEM fenders like I'd hoped for. Noise is similar to the SL AT3Ws when I first got them fitted, so I expect noise similar to those as these age too. They are definitely firmer and not as soft as the SL AT3Ws at similar tire pressures, but with the adjustable Fox dampers I was able to adjust and get the setup to a good balance of firmness and plushness I am happy with.

    Overall I'm happy so far, but qualify my opinions based on having several modifications and adjustment options already in place that are quite effective I feel in offsetting the negatives the upsizing and increase in tire weight brought. I think my opinion would be more complaint-oriented if I didn't have the stuff I noted above. I also don't daily drive the truck to work more than once a week at most typically (can work at home or use a work truck usually) so fuel economy is less a concern for me so much as keeping enough drive-ability to not hate my life when going places.

    I appreciate the in-depth reply! Nice looking truck you got there! My truck is tuned already and I have a K&N drop in air filter w/ the intake tube. I'm sure that will help. Currently I have BFG KO2'S 265/75 16 E load (55 lbs). With the three pound difference per tire (12 lbs total) I'm hoping to have not much power loss.

    My brother has a thrid gen with a similar size lift (factory uppers). He's running the 255/85 16 Wildpeaks on a 16x8 wheel with -12 offset. He did some trimming but no CMC. He lives in CO and wheels his truck almost every weekend. I guess I'll just have to pull the trigger and make adjustments from there.
