Canister Closed Valve Part #

Good morning,

Been searching for this part # for a while with no luck. It is labeled as the “Evap OBD Canister Closed Valve” on the vac line diagram under the hood. One hose runs to the air intake the other runs to the charcoal canister. Valve seems to be letting a small amount of air through when it’s supposed to be closed. Result is that the intake gets flooded with fuel vapor when i fill up with gas. If i disconnect that vacuum like the issue goes away. Can someone help me find the part # for this?

the valve is located in the engine bay. I have the 2.7L so the charcoal canister is located under the bed and it was replaced a few years ago, not the same as the one in that pic you posted. No CELs either, been going on for almost a year now. I just disconnect that one vacuum line when I fill up with gas.

Not quite, I saw that old thread on here too. The two nipples are opposing each other like in the screenshot from the FSM i posted.

 

Did you punch in the part number to see if there is a revised part?

 

Yeah the parts diagram says that fits my year and engine. Still doesn't look quite right. Anyways...I read that other thread again and it says that valve is supposed to be open when the car is turned off, so replacing it will not fix my problem. What is connected downstream of this that could be letting fuel vapors enter the intake? Again, no leaks and no CELs

Yes it does , but that part is not the problem. I've tested it according to the FSM and it's fine. If I disconnect the line from the VSV to the intake while fueling the issue still persists. Only when I disconnect the line from the CCV to the intake does it fix the issue. This leads me to believe the CCV or something downstream of it (charcoal canister) is malfunctioning. Charcoal canister was replaced with an aftermarket one about 4 years ago, so that could be a potential issue but no CELs and I don't want to just throw $300 at it if I can avoid it. Unfortunately I live in NJ so the gas station attendants like to pump gas past when the pump clicks off which is really annoying and I know can destroy charcoal canisters.

I've tested the CCV and it works and is normally open when de-energized so something downstream is the problem, and I've theorized that it is letting fuel vapor into the intake while fueling essentially flooding it. I created a couple other threads on this almost a year ago with no luck. I have a decent high level understanding of how an evaporative emissions system works, but I'm looking for a little more detailed information on what is going on when you fuel up. What valves are in what positions and what is going on at the charcoal canister itself. Maybe it's just a clogged vent/drain line on the canister?? I FF my frame which likes to pick up lots of grime and dirt. If there's a better place to post this let me know, I posted in the technical section about a year ago and didn't have any luck diagnosing the issue.

Turned out this was not sealing properly and was part of the reason I eventually got an evap leak code, but not the reason for the other weird issues I was having.

 

I'm in the process now of trying to figure out a similar issue. I have a 2004 2.4. When the purge opens, vacuum comes from the canister up through the CCV, and intakes air directly from the air box. This happens whenever the engine is running causing a P0171-engine running lean. I pinched off the hose at the air box and the fuel trim numbers went back to normal. The CCV closes when I apply power and ground to it. I'm suspecting the canister, but I'd like to know more about the vacuum switching valves and canister operation at idle.

 

Take a look at these two posts I made, I did a pretty deep dive into learning about the evap systems on these trucks. Mine is a 2.7L so should be similar to your 2.4L.
