Todays thursday or is it friday??
Did my 60k last year after seeing dealer and local shop charges.
Wasnt difficult. Some capital outlay..learned a lot..no disasters...
Teamoildrop and TW got me through...
Theres a sticky 3rd gen maintenance thread..
Can be intimidating and/or overwhelming at first..
Take it task by task..just do one or two things every weekend..
Map out task..tools and materials ahead of time..
2nd guess yourself 3 times and when you do each task its really not that bad..
Most importantly, believe in yourself..we have all been there.

As I understood the guy, the spark plugs would 'crack' and cause damage to the internals that
would require a new CVT. I'm no mechanic - but as I understand it once the CVT is damaged there's
no rescue involved. Parts aren't even available you have to replace it.

A lot of issues can occur with these CVT's so far I've been happy with the behavior on my wife's car.

Advises that it is important to change the tran-fluid in these things as well... which is true for whatever.

Not sure how pieces of spark plug could end up in the transmission..

most of what they do is check and inspect, makes the list look long!
A lot of people get suckered into that!

Hopefully at least store brand right? Gotta pay extra for the brand name that actually works?

    Couldn't resist.:D

Highly doubt spark plug issues are gonna damage the CVT. You might want to check this is what your mechanic said or find a new one

I don't know enough about engines and auto maintenance, I won't sugar coat it....
I wish I did.... I always envied the cats in High School who were wrenching vehicles.
Putting tools in my hands is like giving a child a loaded gun.

But I did google it.. and while not a direct cause apparently it can lead to issues.

While spark plugs and the transmission are separate systems, their operations are related. Here’s how problems with spark plugs might indirectly impact your vehicle’s transmission:

    1. Worn or damaged spark plugs can cause reduced power, misfires, and uneven engine performance. These conditions place additional strain on the transmission as it compensates for the reduced power output, leading to early wear and potential transmission problems.
    2. If spark plugs fail, the engine may stall or run rough. When the engine stalls or runs inconsistently, the transmission can struggle to adjust to the erratic power delivery, which may result in hard shifting or slipping gears.
    3. Bad spark plugs can result in incomplete combustion, causing the engine to burn more fuel. That reduced fuel efficiency means the transmission must work harder to maintain speed and performance, potentially causing additional wear and tear.

Clearly AI summary doesn't know anything about car maintenance either.

I'm not hating on your comment, but so many people on this forum, seem to think everyone here is car maintenance savvy or certified - I've never done any serious maintenance on a car - it's just not my thing and I'm not about to fuck up a large investment. And many people don't have the tools, means or place to do the work.

I see this comment all the time: "Just do it yourself....." and I've seen this with trans flushes threads, and more serious work, not just oil changes.

I won't speak for OP but there's probably a reason why he's not doing the work on his own.

For sure, those items can certainly be done by local shops or even a novice to some extent.

The spark plug job seems to be somewhat of a bitch from what I understand.

I have no inclination messing with the tranny fluid or the brake fluid change which I am having done at 60K / 2y Taco OR. Got a quote in Kaiserslautern (Germany) for EUR 300 for both. That is ok for me. Rest I will do myself. I balance my MX by mess involved, complexity, and lifetime I spend on it (where I could sit in the garden drinking beer). Even though being an aircraft mechanic and knowing my way around Tacos now, I select carefully what I have the stealership do and what I trust myself doing.

Not hating on you either. It is often much cheaper to just do it yourself if possible. Like if you have the space to work, willingness to learn how and physical ability. There are many many Youtube videos on how to do just about anything from auto maintace to home renovation. I've learned a lot that way and from others.
Tools are another thing that can be a barrier to DIY but basic tools to do an oil change and change the diff and transfer case are not that expensive and you don't need to buy expensive brands like MAC tools or Snap-on. Pittsburg brand from Harbor Freight is what over half of my wrenches, Sockets sets and other hand tools are. For working on your own vehices they are plenty good. Plus you own them for the next time you need to do that same or simular jobs the tool purchase eventually pays for it's self in labor savings often times over.
An oil change with full synthetic oil at most oil change shops near me for 6 quart that they up charge you for that because the prices on their menu boards are usually for 5 quarts, so it's like $130 last time I checked. I can go to Walmart and get my oil change stuff for around $40. When I did my front and rear diffs last year I got 75w90 synthetic gear oil for around $10 each quart, and needed 6 of them.

I also get what you are saying about not doing some things. Like I used to do my own brakes and even replaced a head gasket on the car once years ago. Now I would most likely send that work to a mechanic shop I trusted. I've done spark plugs and transmission fluid before too. I would watch some videos on how to preform the work and decide if I was comfortable to do it myself or not.

It's not just the auto service industry doing this. I went to a dentist recently for a basic cleaning that my insurance fully covered. After a few quick looks in my mouth, they were recommending all sorts of non-necessary stuff that added up to a big sum of money even after insurance. I politely declined and told them to just clean my fucking teeth!

This have been a thing in many industries and businesses a long time! I remember when I used to be a Manager for Pizza the Hut. They had a thing they wanted you to do called "suggestive selling". Examle - Would you like an ice cold Pepsi with your Large Meat lover's tonigt? They even had Mystery shoppers call an check to see if we did that too. The objective was to build a bigger guest check.
