At least the hole guides the screw until it can bite.

Ok a few pics to showcase this project I just started, along with some needed recommendations -

I am building a shelf that'll go against a long wall between a kitchen and dining room area.

Overall width will be 144", have a depth of 24", and sit at 33" tall +/- 1" (adjustable feet).

Plan to use countertop butcher blocks available from Home Depot (cheaper than Lowes) but I'm wondering if I should go with three 4' x 25" pieces, or two 6' x 25" pieces. I ask because I don't do woodworking, nor do I have any woodworking tools to be fixing anything if dimensions aren't consistent from one piece to another. Going with three smaller parts comes out to be less as my SIL is trying to save money.

Second thing is, should I expect consistency between parts if I also order cabinet-shelves for the middle layer? Or do y'all have an online source I can order from that's both affordable but good quality?

That's a horrible idea. What time?
Consistency comment. My builder ordered two 36" cabinets from HD as filler cabinets so we could get measured for countertops. We had trouble centering the stove unit. Turns out our cabinets were actually 35.5 and 36.25".

Butcher block counters I think would be more consistent due to the manufacturing process.

I think 2 6' butcher block tops would be better. Then you only have one seam. VS 2 you would see.

From a cost and handling perspective, I was thinking three 4 footers. For aesthetics, two 6 footers.

I guess I'll just have them delivered to her house cause ain't no way I'm transporting them myself. That and they should get installed where the shelf will go anyway which would be at her house and if they need finishing up/sealing they can just do it in their backyard I guess.

My biggest concern really was the overall dimensions. As big of a family as they have, no one really lends a hand to do anything whether it's DIY work, automotive work, etc other than me. :bananadead:

If I'm looking at it correctly it's probably 2.5"? That's where it sits on top of the cabinets.

The edge/overhang is over 3" so that's where I used 3" for thickness.

It's some 42" long at about 15' wide.

Making a few simple wood art things for my family members this Christmas. Have always wanted to put a few of these together for Xmas presents but every time I think to do it it’s already December 20th. Only like five more to go and Xmas shopping will be done for the year!

Those are great. Did you use reclaimed wood or is it just the distressed paint job making it look that way?

Do today's update in the "cabinet makers" exhaust hood. Filled with stainable wood filler. Not my preferred choice ( walnut man glitter and glue), lot's of sanding. And since we're still in a building state and creating dust, I moved it to the breakfast nook for some AC.

All the edges were sandedand broke with a medium/fine sanding block. Bosch palm sander for the rest, including rolling the edge from the flat vertical to the sloped vertical. More sanding tomorrow and hopefully some stain goes on.

Keeping it simple with some scraps. No fancy dove tails joints or anything. Although I did add a trap door with hinges and clasp on the bottom to empty the caps.
