No worries! We spent another 8+ hours on the 3G Tundra today! We’re getting close, very, very close!

Stage 1 Update – Now Live for Gas Models

We’re excited to announce that the Stage 1 calibration update is now live and available for automatic and manual gas model trucks (4th Gen Tacoma and 6th Gen 4Runner). This update introduces some long-requested improvements and sets the stage for future releases.

    Automatic Transmission (Gas) Updates

The primary change in this update is the removal of the factory load/boost limiter in 1st gear.
Gas trucks can now reach full target load and boost in 1st and 2nd gear, resulting in:
    • Improved "high-effort" acceleration
      • Half second improvement in 0-60 acceleration
      • Thoroughly tested across various conditions, including full boost launches in 4Lo, with no adverse impact to drivetrain integrity.
    • More consistent low-gear performance under heavy load or spirited driving
    • Consistent torque output from 1st-8th gear under all conditions
    Additional changes:
    • Revised torque modeling to support the new load strategy
    • Revised TCU calibration for more consistent gear selection in 1-3rd Gear
    Manual Transmission (Gas) Updates

Due to underlying code structure differences between the Auto and Manual ECUs, we're still working on implementing the full load/boost changes for manual trucks. That said, we’re launching a Stage 1 update for manual transmissions today with several user-requested improvements:
    • Increased Rev Limiter (→ 6300 RPM)
These changes now match the automatic transmission calibration and allow manual users to access more of the powerband when needed.
We’re still actively working toward parity on the full load strategy between Auto and Manual platforms and will share updates as development continues.

    AGM Battery Profile Support

We’ve also added updated calibrations for vehicles equipped with factory alternators that have fitted AGM profile batteries. These changes revise the charging logic to better suit AGM battery chemistry, improving battery longevity, performance in cold climates, and ensuring accurate state of charge management.

If your vehicle has been upgraded to an AGM battery, reach out to your OTT retailer to request this updated charging profile.

    Looking Ahead
    • Stage 2 / Stage 2+: Testing is wrapping up and is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
    • Stage 3 / Stage 3+: Turbo hardware has been finalized and passed high-speed VSR balancing under full oil pressure, exceeding real-world shaft speed requirements. Calibration development is underway.
    • Stage 2 and Stage 3 development for Hybrid models will closely follow gas model development, ensuring parity between platforms as quickly as possible.
*We're on track to begin testing and validation for Stage 3 shortly after Stage 2 wraps.*

Thanks to everyone for your continued support. As always, if you’ve got questions, feedback, or want to schedule your update, reach out to your OTT retailer or message us directly.

I just re-geared my 3rd gen trd OR Tacoma to 5.29 ratio, wanting to tune but was wondering if I should wait until I hit 500 miles before, also I have 33” tires but planning to get 35” in near future. If I tune it now will it throw the tune off when I move up in tire size?

Can someone confirm for 3rd gen that its ok to smog check with the OTT tune? is there a carb sticker that needs to be attached under the hood, do I need to tell the guy something or just do it normally and it will check out?

You can tune the truck any time. Whether you tune for the gears or not, we recommend you follow the gear manufacturer. break-in procedure.

Tuning while in the break-in stage will save you a visit to your tuner (or flashing your own vehicle) after the break-in is complete.

The tune for the 3G Tacoma isn't dependent upon tire size (as it is for gear size). However, most folks do move to a more aggressive throttle setting to offset the larger tire diameter, rolling mass, etc., though that isn't required if you're happy with the settings.

Generally speaking, yes, you'll be fine. If all of your emissions equipment is in-tact and functioning (w/ no CEL) you're not likey to have an issue depending on your location.

Some locations in the US are now performing CVN checks, and the only way you can pass in those locations is with our CARB-EO calibration. Depending on when your truck was tuned with us, it will determine if you have our EO calibration or not. We can help you with determining what calibration you're on. Send us an email at info@overlandtailor.com and let us know you want to determine your EO status with us. We'll get you sorted.

If you're not on our calibration yet, no worries. Our current file has a CARB-EO and you'll get all the required documentation and sticker at the time of your tune.

Have you received CARB Approval for the 5th Gen 4Runner? If not do you know when this will happen.

    Thanks

As an existing customer for the 4G M/T tune, that's exciting news. However, I would not want to increase the redline from stock. Is there a solution for me where I could get this update but without the change to redline?

The only change we made to the 4G manual calibration was raising the rev limiter to match what the auto trucks received. If you’d prefer not to have the higher limiter, you’ll want to remain on your current file.

According to Sheldon Brown, the Chief Engineer at Toyota for the 4G Tacoma, the redline was lowered to 5200 RPM on the manual transmission models to avoid crankshaft hammering caused by higher NVH due to the reduced dampening effect of the lighter rotating mass of the manual transmission relative to the automatic. Citation:

    https://youtu.be/6KXiQgTg-uI?t=715

You shouldn't be raising the redline.

I just passed smog in SF, CA. Figure it's not much more stringent m/any other places, but have no idea. Went in tuned with the sticker under the hood and was done before everyone else who was there before me. A couple of people even commented to the cashier.

We’re still working out the final details as Stage 2 development continues.

Stage 1 is where we expect the majority of owners will land. Our testing shows the stock turbo just doesn’t have much more to give beyond what Stage 1 delivers. Even with more aggressive 91-octane calibrations or bolt-ons that improve efficiency and reduce pumping losses, the gains aren’t nearly as dramatic as going from stock to Stage 1. The reality is the factory turbo simply isn’t sized for much more output.

Because of that, the backbone of Stage 2 will be more about preparing the truck for the likely progression to Stage 3 with the bolt-on turbo upgrade. Stage 2 will be an incremental step, while Stage 3 is where owners chasing significantly more performance will find what they’re looking for.

Nice I’m coming from a FBO TRX so interested to see what stage 3 numbers are. Are these computers able to do ethanol like the GR Corollas? I see ECUTEK came out with Racerom software for those so hopefully we can get something similar

You can rest assured when we have it dialed, you'll find the results here! :)

The ECU's (GR Corolla and the Tacoma) aren't natively able to do true flex fuel, that is done through custom code patching. Is it possible? Sure! But tuning these Gen 4 trucks is still very new in comparison and the demand/sales of basic tuning will steer development of custom featuers like Flex capability. It's not cheap/easy writing and developing custom code so the market needs to demonstrate the demand before stuff like that finds it's way into the trucks.

Have there been an updates/ETA on the handheld DIY tuner that is in the works?
