That TSB is because one of the pipes that connects to the bypass wasn't fully seated. The bypass on the 3.5 was plastic the entire Tacoma run; never metal. Some Lexus models did have a metal one that was similar but not exactly the same.

The thing with auto reviewers that I take with a grain of salt is that they review thousands of cars and trucks and their standards are probably high vs normal everyday people. They are reviewing high performance cars from Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes so their perception is very skewed and probably want or expect every single car/truck to have the same or similar performances. Just last year they reviewed the Tacoma trd sport with smaller powerplant and they liked it? Which contradicts the 4Runner review.

With that said.. My Tacoma trd off road hybrid premium feels strong and capable.

At first glance of this thread, there are a couple of factors thing it would appear everyone is forgetting. Toyota is renowned for their R&D when it comes to building motors and 4x4 drivetrains.

Think about it. Even the latest Gen Supra took so long to come to market because Toyota kept sending changes back to BMW.

I would suspect this motor and drivetrain is no different. That said - I am very curious about seeing how these engines hold up.

This is true. But the one thing Toyota can't seem to get right is timing covers.

Looks like the two piece covers are now starting to leak as they age. TCCN posted a video of a A25 that had a cover leak, which is very similar to the T24A.

Have a Taco TH. It is a nice ride and has plenty of power to spare. Routinely cruise 70-80MPH with plenty left for a quick pass. Frankly, not sure why I would push it above 100MPH - concern is stability.

So, has anyone swapped in a bigger turbo and relocated the intercooler yet? If you want more power, you could get it, it's just a question of how the trans would hold up I guess.

I think it's fine for a truck, certainly not trying to win any races

CCN attributed the timing cover leak in the A25 that he was servicing to a random oil contamination at the seal during assembly, not a design flaw. But as always, if it shows up on YouTube…”it’s a major issue!”. Pretty clever on his part, really. Obviously he has people clicking & crying foul in the comments, all the while he acknowledges that the A25 is actually a very solid motor. But then, you may not hear that part around here…

Afraid of turbos, afraid of plastic, afraid of what happens on GM motors, random timing cover leaks, meteors falling, afraid of your own shadow…it’s a wonder how some folks are able to get themselves out of bed each morning.

I don’t think it’s that the standards are higher, it’s that they have to find an engaging angle to drive revenue.

“this vehicle is fine” doesn’t sell ads.

Every single vehicle has issues, eventually. The question is, when will the issues show up. If early - it's a problem. If later on in the life cycle of the vehicle, it's fine.

I feel like that's why most of us buy Toyotas; to avoid the problems until well after most of the domestic equivalents have them. I like the look and feel of the Canyon, for example, but there's just no way I'm paying that much for a truck that's likely to be falling apart around the time my Tacoma is getting broken in ahead of its 100k service. That said, even my 1992 Tacoma and my 98 Corolla had stuff leak and break, even though they're considered two of the best vehicles ever made.

Where would you put it? Genuine question.

I've never seen my 4G IATs more than 10 degrees over ambient except for idling for extended periods (even then the IAT doesn't get as hot as my WRXs)

The intercooler is literally the first thing that gets hit by fresh air and it's as wide as the grille. I know Mishimoto has an aftermarket one, but if you bolt that onto a stock truck you'll gain nothing but more turbo lag.

Ah, yeah I don't own one, just thinking out loud. It's in that packed in there?
Either way, like I said, the Tacoma can be slow...IMO. Plenty of fast cars out there for good prices right now if you have a need for speed...

    Ah sorry, makes sense

Anyways it's a pretty big intercooler and its in the best location it can be to be honest. Upgrading to the Mishimoto (which I'm sure some of you will do here lol) without a tune is just going to make the turbo work harder and increase the turbo lag. I'm sure the stock intercooler is rated for more than the rods are

Nice, and yeah, I'm sure most people aren't looking to see how far they can push their rods or trans on their $60k truck.

...but someone should, just so we know lol
