Why is my fan so loud? I assumed my muffler was just making my engine quiet so I upgraded to a magnaflow, and it sounds great when i turn it on, or about 2 seconds before the fan engages. After that all i hear is that damn fan. Is there something wrong with it?

Is your AC on? If so, the AC clutch will be engaged.

A bad fan clutch can also can cause excessive noise. Same for a broken fan blade.

I'm thinking bad clutch or possibly busted blade as above.

I wouldn't say mine is all that noticeable.

Have you had the fan clutch replaced recently? This is indicative of a cheap made clutch or as above a cracked or broken fan.

I did not have the ac on so I know it cant be that. My brother had it replaced when he owned it about 3 years ago and it's always been super loud. I was never really concerned until yesterday when I installed a new muffler and I cant even hear the difference in sound because of how loud the clutch fan is. Im guessing he replaced it with a cheap one and that is causing the loud sound? The odd part is the fan gets super loud only when I rev it. Its actually not that loud at idle. But as soon as I give it just a little bit of gas, all I hear is the fan and it's like this all the way to 4000 rpm.

I have not tried to re-oil it. I could try today and see if that helps.

Sounds like you fan is engaged all the time!

Most likely time for a new Fan Clutch!

Im not sure if the fan clutch is bad though? Its only 3 years old at max. But I've been watching some videos and it sounds nothing like any other first gen tacoma I've ever heard. Its just so strange to me because at idle it's quiet, not even noticeable. It gets louder as the engine rpms go up, kinda like it's matching the engine rpms. Strange but I dont think it's a bad clutch, has good resistance when I spin it. Maybe it's just a after market one that is just very loud?

Without a video, we can’t really help you. Your definition of loud will be different from my definition or someone else’s.

Some other issue related to front end noise will be the idler pulley for the AC, fan pulley bracket, and alternator. Who’s to say it’s not the timing components as well. At this point, it can be anything.

Well I know it is the fan. I just dont know why it is so bad since nothing appears to be wrong with it. My guess is I should just buy the oem one or something

So I did some testing, got the engine completely warm and then shut it off, went to spin the fan, it has quite a bit of resistance and as soon as I stop turning it, it stops immediately, doesn't continue to spin at all. Im guessing it's seized and instead of disengaging when the engine revs, it instead matches the pulley speed. My dad doesn't thimk there is anything wrong since the engine temp is fine, but Im pretty sure it's seized up and that's why it's so loud when I rev.

I replaced my fan clutch with an Aisin unit from Rock Auto. The original fan clutch kept the fan engaged all the time, even on the freeway. The fuel efficiency took a hit with the engine fan roaring constantly. I hoped the added thrust would make the truck quicker but, sadly, it did not.

I saw vid about changing fluid
Dude changed fluid and all was good per video. Of course, dude didn’t explain FC symptoms b4 fluid change

Besides just how much the stuff was
    Where did fluid go?
I couldn’t fathom spending $50 on fluid just so could leak out again/burn up(?) after a period of time

Good Point! A drip here and there over 10 plus years you might never notice.

A clutch fan should slow to a stop fairly quickly when hand spinning it. It’s not suppose to spin freely when doing so.
