Yeah I don’t cut the ends flush until I shuck the corn after roasting. If there is any stray husk I will cut that off so it doesn’t ignite in the grill.

I soak corn and get my charcoal lit. By the time the charcoal is ready I take the corn out of the water - 20m or so.

I used to grill in foil, but the taste is so far superior in the husk. And many believe grilling in foil is hazardous to your health - I would tend to understand that thinking.

Debate amongst yourself on that. My buddy on IG kept yelling at me for doing it.

    Morning all:

I used to go to a small church picnic where they covered the corn over the grill plates with wet burlap, SOOO GOOD!

I am in the husk guy myself. I will try cutting the ends off the next time I grill corn rather than prior to grilling.

I mean I could see why you'd do it before grilling, and I have seen that. I am thinking the husks are more likely to flake off or fall off instead of do their job if you cut the ends off prior to grilling but maybe not.

The burlap idea does intrigue me a bit. I just think the husks AND the silk help create that moist environment inside the husk to help cook, protect the kernels from scorching and create the right texture for eating.

My typical cook time is around 30 minutes. Rotating a quarter turn every 7-8 minutes.

Per the decline in birds discussion: I just found out that the Pinion Pine Jay has declined in population 85% in the last 50 years.

For westerners, this is a cool site: https://www.stateofthebirds.org/2025/western-forest-birds/

Anyone with land or even backyard can help. Start by not killing every bug, and just don't use pesticides or herbicides whenever possible. For example we only use concentrated vinegar for weed control. I will use some deltamethrin for a known ground yellowjacket colony that is too close to people. But mainly I use traps, and early. Get the queens early and really no problems.

Admittedly, I use this for mosquitoes, works like a charm.

Can actually sit outside at night!

Amazon.com: Demand CS Insecticide - Contains iCAP Technology for Long-Lasting Pest Control, Sprayable Insecticide, Effective Against Over 30 Pests, Formulated for Indoor & Outdoor Use (8 oz) : Patio, Lawn & Garden

The key is to spray just before mosquito season and reapply once or twice during the summer or after heavy wet periods.

I have a pumper bottle, it also works for interior for roaches and the like. Pet friendly.

For a real treat, Do sweet corn "The Down East Way"
Much like the above, On a flat plate over an open wood fire, Only put a foot thick layer of FRESH SEA WEED on the plate, then pile on the corn, chicken, hot dogs, potato, whatever does good by steaming, (Clams if you got 'em .. Steamers! Yum) Cover with a canvas tarp , let steam for a couple hours....

    Tasty

    Speaking of mosquitoes....
    And Bat.....

Last night the wife and I sat out on the back deck for supper.
A half dozen or more bats wheeled and flew overhead through the open spaces between the tall trees. All the bats seemed to do their hunting about 40 feet up.
There were a few mosquitoes around us at ground level, (not many, It's been very dry)
What are those flying mice eating up so high?

    Afternoon :hattip:

Finally was able to get the Camaro out of the garage and cruise around town earlier today !!!! . I always have fun at stoplights watching the different reactions of people

The best and funniest reactions are always at stoplights watching husbands being slapped by their wives as they start staring at my Camaro and the light turns green and they're not moving
