What's more important, low mileage or warranty??

Hey, shopping for a certified pre-owned 3rd Gen again. What's better/more important/more valuable???? Miles or warranty?
2 trucks, both Certified, both serviced very well, both 2021s. One has 20k miles, the other has 60k. Both have run out of any Toyota factory warranty but both have 12/12 and about 2 years on 7/100.
20k truck has a $3k+ cap that I'd really like to have, 60k truck has no bed cover at all that I'd need to add. Prices are in line w/ KBB retail.

    20k truck asking $37,500
    60k truck asking $33,000

My current thinking is to buy the 60k truck and buy more Toyota certified warranty and add a used cap.

    Thoughts and opinions appreciated!!

I personally would negotiate the price of the lower milage one down a bit and say fuck no to purchasing any additional extended warranty (aftermarket warranties are not worth it brother!).

But then again, what the hell do I know?

CPO means the dealer rubber-stamped the vehicle to justify a higher selling price. You have to inspect each one for common 3rd gen issues yourself.

If both look similar, get the one with 20k, as it buys your more time on wearout parts like wheel bearings and A/C compressor.

Lower mileage truck for sure. 40k difference in mileage is probably the equivalent of 2 to3 years of extra driving for most people.

If it was me I'd try to negotiate down the price of the 20k truck. I'm not an extended warranty type of guy. YMMV. My 2020 after 5 years and 55K miles has been awesome. One failed center cap and just regular maintenance. However, 3rd gens have had some known issues. Leaky rear coolant leak, timing cover leak and burnt valves.

I learned my lesson with an extended warranty on my Honda - $2000 I financed was a complete waste. I tried to use it one time and it was an "exclusion" - of course. It was like a fuse related issue. Other than that my Honda pissed me off, I had to change the oil and put gas in it. Bought it with 77K miles, and drove it to 277K over a 8 year period.

I think for the most part extending a warranty on a reliable brand like Honda or Toyota is a complete waste of money.

If this was a Land Rover or Jaguar, you def go Doug Demuro, and buy that warranty.

Clark Howard, the consumer advocate also says that, pound for pound, extended warranties are a winner for the seller not the consumer.

If the service history reads like a fairy tale, and the car fax is clean, and the title is clean, I guess that would be good enough for me.

I like lower miles. But if you like lower price, then go that route.

I just bought a 2023 CPO with 15k for $38. I think your prices are about right as ridiculous as it sounds. I would go with the lower mileage truck. It is more, but mileage is something you can never get back. Unless Toyota reverses policy on the v6, the 3rd gens will always have a following.

Can't really determine whats best for you, BUT:
IF you buy the 60k truck for $33k, add $2k for warranty and a $2-3k cap, are you not just paying the same price as the 20k truck in the end, for a truck with 40k more miles? Easy answer there. As others said, shoot for the 20k truck AND try to get the price down in the process.

Probably the lower mileage truck, but I am wary of a vehicle with very low miles since it may have been off the road for a while following a wreck. Since it’s CPO it’s probably fine. Check the paint thickness on the sheet metal panels to see if they’ve been repainted.

The 7 year part of the Gold warranty starts when you buy the truck, the 100k mi. part of the warranty is the speedometer reading. Meaning the 60k truck essentially only has the 12/12 and 40k mi. drive train.

With the 20k mile truck you're probably going to get the full 7 years, or if you drive the shit out of it 80k miles.

oh, I’d definitely check with the dealer about the Gold extension….Me thinks there is no such Toyota corporate product. So if the dealer tries to sell you one it may be through a third party with you probably paying for overlapping coverage.

I think, even with your listed price delta, the 20k mile truck is a better value.

I would take the 20 k truck less milage and has the cap u want . Extended warranties can be purchased through the bank at a lower price than a dealer . If you are financing .

Thanks for all the response so far. Damn I've missed this forum!

20k truck had its 1st oil change at the dealer at the 2,000 mile mark and every 5k since then....

60k truck had its first at 10k and every 10k after, all at dealer and new plugs at current selling dealership.

I've been eyeballing 4th Gens too, even put a deposit on a lightly used 4th Gen manual TRDOR, then took it back. Just can't get on board with them....

Give me low miles any day way before any add on warranty. Any warranty other than new vehicle factory warranty to me is like any kind of insurance. They'll do anything to get your money and love to take it but try to make a claim and they want nothing to do with you.

Based on this added info, I think I'm still voting 20k mile truck. But that's just me. It's your money.

Make sure you post a photo when you get whatever truck you buy. Happy Hunting.

I personally put no weight into oil changes. However, generally a vehicle that someone is that particular about maintenance, would be better cared for beyond just oil changes. That isn't to say that someone that did it every 10k didn't care as much, but someone has to be real motivated to sit at a dealership for 3 hours every couple of months.

Now Toyota doesn’t have an extended ‘warranty' on top of the certified warranties, but they do have what they call VSC contracts (vehicle service contract). Would be cool if you could get and share with us those quotes (3rd gen vs 4th gen would be really cool). I'd like to see what Toyota thinks about their 100k + mi trucks in terms of projected maintenance costs.

    Or naive..
Sometimes people go in every 5k miles bc some tech likes to make easy money on them, and they know no differently. The 10k interval guy could care twice as much, knowing the manufacturer calls for 10k OCI's.

But that just makes your point. We should put no weight into oil changes, as we can't exactly paint the entire picture off records alone.

I will definitely ask. I was told before you can add "coverage" from Toyota for an additional 100k on a Certified Toyota from the date of purchase, and it's one of those "very negotiable" dollar amounts. But I'm not afraid to piss off a salesman or F+I guy, so I'll definitely ask :)

WOW - my 2021 has 25,000 easy well cared for miles on it.
Bought it new tag-tax-title out the door was like $38k..... I damn near had kittens over that price.

But to think my 2021 ACab could fetch $37k means I spent $1,000 to drive this beast for 4+ years.
    That's like $20.00 a month....

Wish I had the picture my daughter took of me jumping in the air in front of my 1992 Pickup after I hit 199,999 miles on it.
