This weekend I sanded down the peeling paint on the hood, roof, and a frames, then hit it with primer and a shitty rattle can paint job! Felt good to bite the bullet and finally do something about it. Still need to wet sand the paint up from 1000 to 5k or so and hit it with a cutting compound and some polish.

If I could go back in time, I would sand it MUCH better. I hadn't initially planned on hitting it with a DIY paint job so I just smoothed it out a bit to accept a vinyl wrap. However, once I had it all taped off for primer, I decided to just paint it. We'll see how I feel once it's sanded and (maybe) clear coated. [IMG]

More mods than it should have...
LOOOOOONG overdue maintenance job for my Kings (yeah, yeah don't judge :anonymous:). Replaced the spherical bearings, misalignment spacers and proper bolt for the lower shock mount. I meant to replace them months ago when they weren't bad but kinda forgot about them till they started squeaking recently. One side was so bad that I could only get the half eaten spacer out because the other one literally melted into the bearing.

Pretty sure I got a little water in the rear diff over the weekend while launching a boat, had some tire skipping on turns that started immediately after. Was less than 1k ahead of my change schedule, so went ahead and changed it. Old oil was slightly high (a decent bit came out through the fill plug when I popped it off) and just a little bit milky. Fresh synthetic 75w90 w/ additive for my limited slip diff and we seem to be all good again. Apparently it's time to do a breather relocate so I don't need to do this again for 30k.

I painted my roof about a year ago using one of those Rustoleum gloss black Turbo cans. Honestly, it’s about as close as you can get to a professional spray gun without having a full air compressor setup. The can pressure and paint output are impressive.

The key after priming is to start with a light dust coat, follow with a solid coverage pass, and then finish with a wet coat to even everything out. The Turbo can lays down enough paint that you can easily wet sand out any orange peel with 800–1000 grit, then either clear it or just finish with compound and polish.

I went with the compound/polish route, and it turned out great, no streaks, super glossy, and a smooth finish.

I finally installed some RadRubber inner fender splash guards. My factory one ripped so I found these at a good deal. Prepped them with some fluid film per the sellers recommendation

Let's hope I can get to a result similar to what you had! What was your sanding process like? Because I *actually* plan to paint it when sanding I only smoothed things out from about 400 to 800 and feathered the peeling paint into the areas where it has peeled completely down to the primer. Wish I had just taken it down to the bare metal all around, but there's no going back now!

The clear coat on my roof had completely failed, leaving blotchy patches of factory clear and bare spots. I sanded everything with 600 to feather the edges where clear was still intact, then finished with 800 for a smoother surface with enough bite for primer.

I laid down high-build automotive primer (no bare metal exposed), then misted on some flat black as a guide coat. Wet-sanded with 800 to knock down any orange peel and smooth things out. Since I was spraying a large surface, the primer was a little streaky due to the small spray pattern (just used a normal sized can with that baseball sized spray pattern), but sanding evened it out.

As mentioned above, I used Rustoleum gloss black turbo cans, three coats: a light dust coat, a medium coverage coat, and a final flow coat. Enamel really lays down nice if you hit that last coat right, it levels out well but can run if you go too heavy. The turbo cans make a big difference, the wide fan pattern covers the whole roof in just a few passes with no streaking. After about a month in the summer sun, I used Meguiar's ultimate polish and then waxing glaze. 90% of the work is prep, use wax and grease remover constantly, tack cloth, etc. The more prep you do the better it will come out.

Just took mine off today as well. On the hunt for a tonneau to at least have a little bit of secure storage.

Yeah, I realize in retrospect that it would have been much better to stay the course instead of making the split decision to paint it. Although the results aren't terrible, had I followed a better method like the one you outlined I would have had a better finished product. I still have a few rolls of vinyl that I was planning to wrap it with anyway, may lay that on and see how it looks over the smooth-ish coat of paint I've got on. Do you think 2 weeks is long enough to let the paint cure before laying something over it?

If it was acrylic spay paint your fine, if it was enamel I would honestly give it 2 more weeks. Enamel takes a while to fully gas out, even if it feels dry to the touch.
