Homemade Stubby Snorkel

I have been thinking of making a homemade snorkel I do not want one that comes up the windshield, here are some that I like what do yall think.

X2 the fender one looks legit although I probably would have tried to run PVC instead and ran the stack up higher

 

I don't really see the point of a snorkel if it only gains a foot or so of height on the intake.

 

All depends on what you drive through I guess. I would imagine water proofing plugs and other wired connections might be the place to start if you truly need a snorkel though. At the air intake height of my 3.4, the block would be underwater. Depending on speed I could still push a "wall" of water and hope like hell the engine bay doesn't flood but what happens if you get stuck?

 

Well they were originally made for keeping the intake above dust

 

Snorkels were made for dusty situations, just so happens that it works very well with wet situations too.

Really? Never knew that. Whenever I'm in dust though it usually just as high as the roof. But then again I don't live in the desert or any place like that

 

Water will flood the interior well before it will get to the stock intake.

Ask me how I know.

I'd just buy a well known kit, you're time is worth a tried and true system simply for the installation, don't waste your time on development, trust me, I'm a trail engineer. The "we have to get home to work tomorrow" type.

 

I am not looking to cross a river just want to get the cleaner cooler air to the engine I also have a Donaldson pre-cleaner that will go on it when it is really dusty conditions

 

i voted for the fendeer but i wanted to vote for the fender.....anyone else notice that or am i the only anal one

If you're in a caravan with trucks in front of you the dust usually doesn't get above roof height.

 

Looks like dust is way over roof height there lol but regardless in Missouri I'd be more worried about water than dust, but that still isn't a legitimate concern for what I do with my truck

Hey guys. I popped into my Google Analytics account and noticed a bunch of hits to my site from the above link so I decided to just log in and post. Hope it helps.

The main reason for this type of snorkel is the dust control. The uni-filter snorkel style gets clogged with dust fast. I was working for the Forest Service at the time and driving 200+ offroad miles a day. I could have changed the air filter daily at that point and I was tired of it so I went with the "tractor" solution. Commercial vehicles and tractors use these prefilters to keep the air clean for their engines so it was a matter of getting the right size (dependent on the CFM's of your engine)

This type of pre-filter takes out almost all of the dust, dirt and debris. Take a look at Donaldson's site. Since installing it I haven't really ever had to change the filter no matter what I drive through. I change it yearly just to be thorough but it always looks almost new.

Regarding the height, I don't see a point in going to the top of the windshield because my electronics and gas engine would never sustain that depth of water. The OEM location of the intake however would have drowned the engine on several crossings I've done. It's sort of placed at the maximum crossing height for me personally. I have an extension if I really had to cross something deeper though. We did a little river crossing last month where it came in handy. I only have video of my buddies truck with the same snorkel setup, but it should show how the inner fender OEM location would have possibly caused some issues.
