Is our "basic warranty" weak?

I was just perusing the web to see what other car manufacturers' warranties were going for and found Toyota's to be "not so extensive".

Hyundais, for example, are covered 60 month, 60k miles, 120 months powertrain, and 100k powertrain miles.

Toyota is only at 36 month, 36k miles, 60 months powertrain, and 60k powertrain miles.

Even Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Dakota, and Chevy Colorado have 100k powertrain miles, just curious as to why these are so different across the board and why Toyota doesn't at least have the 100k powertrain miles

I know this may be comparing apples to oranges but I think it's still a legitimate question.

    Hmm....

Wrangler, Dakota and Colorado, all mentioned in this "Worst Cars on the road" article. Not one mention of Toyota though. (Edit: Dakota not actually mentioned, but plenty of other Chrysler junk is, so why dick with the dakota)

I know Toyota has legendary reliability and probably doesn't need it, but why did they not jump on the 100k powertrain mile bandwagon back when that was "the thing to do" (and apparently still is) for manufacturers? I'd also like to know if anyone here has had any major repairs done within (or outside) of the factory warranty.

I'm not dissing Toyota in any way with all this, curiosity has simply got the best of me.

I would read the fine print as to what is covered by the warranty. I have had very good luck with having problems fixed, recently over $2,000 in work on the emissions systems that was covered under warranty without them even blinking.

In contrast, I also own a Subaru, the warranty is longer, but they try everything to avoid doing work under the coverage of the warranty, and try to bill you for everything.

Also had the TSB springs and shocks done, without question. Blower motor squeak, fixed no questions. Serpentine belt idler pulley squeak, fixed no question.

Subarus are better rigs than my 09 Taco. I've beat this poor car on many a fire road and it still rattles less at 150K miles than my Taco at <25k miles. No SHIT!!

That said, I bought all the warranty I could get, down to the upholstery. I have had a rattle since day one, they have worked on it 4-5 times at every oil change. Last service was the fist one that made it go away for about a week. Rattle is present at that good MPG light throttle range.

I have only had two issues with the two Toyota's I own, I had a problem with the air on the Taco and it was covered under warranty. My Camry, I don't remember what it was but it was not covered, couple hundred bucks out of pocket.

I love Subarus also. But, my recent experiences with the dealer changed my mind about their business end of the company.

I live in the Northwest. It rains a lot and constantly. I got a Legacy Wagon with a sunroof (why in retrospect I am not sure). It leaked from the first week I had it until I sold it a year later. Subaru never fixed it. They tried once and then blamed me. I still can not figure that on out. Care drove great, but water on my head in the morning was not acceptable.

    Apologize for thread jacking.

Only plan that seems worth it would be the Powertrain Plan. Still a bit of gyp.

Don't like the 1st 2 b/c of the wording. "Most of"...most of my ass.

PP is a gyp. You get the extra 40K, but only 1 more year.

We drive the crap outta my wifes car and it still won't hit 100K by the 6th year, close, but won't hit it.

Notice how Toyota's extended warranty is handled by the company's insurance arm? It means on average, you will save money by not getting the extended warranty and just "take a gamble" by paying for the repairs as they come. :)

The Hyundai 120 months/100k miles powertrain warranty is to the original owner only, and is the same as Toyota (60 months/60k miles) if the vehicle changes hands. Gives a perception of confidence without a lot of additional liability. How many original owners - people buying new - keep a vehicle more than 5 years in the US?

OEMs make the warranty terms meet whatever their marketeers tell them is needed to sell the product.

My dealer does lifetime Powertrain for the original owner so I'm not too worried about the Powertrain portion although I thought Toyota was 70,000.
