I believe since the block chain is auditable...someone could probably identify the # of coins that have zero transactions in the last 10 years and assume a significant % of them are lost.

I've always been suspicious of that. One of the biggest and most often mentioned benefits is that they can't just be made up or taken away, and are relatively traceable since it's all on blockchain. But then it makes no sense how they get lost or unaccounted for if there really is a finite amount.
i want to like bitcoin so bad but it just seems too much like one of those things that have more and more plot holes and contradictions the more you dig

You do "clip coins" in a sense. It costs fraction of coins to transact. Some cryptos burn off coins to transact. Others use coins to verify transactions etc.

If you're familiar with hashing files for authenticity, that's how the block chain works. Each block is completed and hashed and that hash value is incorporated into the next block. You can't modify any of the previous transactions without corrupting the hash value.

People earn fractions of Crypto coins for mining the coins, hashing the block chain and verifying the hashes...
