Inspected in-frame wiring. I noticed some shrinkage, may need some retaping.

Pita for sure, I change mine on cooler days so I have some wiggle room with that 7 degrees of time just in case.

I do not disagree with most of what you say, BUT the engineering of the transmission appears to have changed; used to have a wide enough range of acceptable oil-level, to accommodate many variations of temperature, so as long as the vehicle was running in neutral; the dipstick was acceptably accurate. Seems that now the oil level has become more critical. which I cannot help but to interpret as being less reliable, or at least in need of more frequent (and involved) maintenance in order to remain reliable. Manufacturer's saving a qt of oil and a few ounces of metal (for smaller oil reserve), multiplied by hundreds of thousands of vehicles; adds up to real savings; but still shifts reliability to the consumer; and with a much larger learning curve for how to perform that service correctly. Seems like a Bean Counters influence to me.

Today, I installed OEM mud flaps on my 2019 Tacoma SR truck. Easy peasy install. I also replaced broken license plate light housings too!IMG_20250831_151239823.jpg IMG_20250831_151117280_HDR.jpg IMG_20250831_151132693_HDR.jpg

Finally changed out the front differential fluid at 35k. Was shockingly clean.

Also ordered some 5100 front struts with Labor Day sales.

I would like to include dealerships in the list of people who put the wrong ATF in transmissions. I'm out of town, but my wife just picked up my 22 MT with a new transmission from the dealership yesterday. About a year ago they did a flush for my 50k service, and since "there is no Toyota branded GL4 ATF" they filled it with GL5.

It took some faffing about, but they eventually foot the bill for a new trans. I get home Tuesday and will find out then if my 4th gear grind has gone away.

I might be able to make this. Is it only for club members or is anyone with a Toyota welcome? I've never been to anything like this so I don't really know what to expect.

Some sites erroneously show both parts with the same part #. The part # in the OP on the box is the correct part #.

They still needed to be at operating temps before checking, just if you over filled most of them the breathers would kick out the extra ATF... I can remember filling a fresh rebuild with about a 1/2 to 1 quart extra while going through all the gears on the rack (in manual and automatic mode using the shifter) before the test drive and then do the same on the test drive and then bring it back in, rack and raise and spray off any that came out the vent... lol
The old Mopar 3&4 speeds vent was in the bell housing, so always made you a little nervous when/if any leaked out the vent cause you hoped it wasn't a front pump seal leaking...

Most manufactures have gone to less frequent maintenance and still remain reliable. We used to service the trans every 30K or less, then some went to 50K service, and then the NOT realistic lifetime crap, even the Toyota/Lexus Car Nut guy recommends 60K services on the WT ATF trany's vs the older every 30K services... Mostly due to better designed ATF's and friction material being used and better, more controlled temps, warm up faster and maintain temps better...

Yes the older trans had larger pans in some cases, but the newer A500/A518 trans had deeper pans than the older A904/A727 trans did, due to the added 4th gear part of the valve body needing a deeper pan... I put a later model (deep) pan on my older trans for added capacity and cooling...

Most transmission ATF level can be checked in park, the reason the older Mopar trans had to be checked in neutral was due to the fact that all transmission torque converters (mostly anyway) drain back into the pan, the sealing rings used to be bad about letting a converter drain back, just every manufacture but Mopar covered it up by feeding/filling the converter in park, hence why Mopar required being checked in neutral... But with a little drilling, filing on the valve body in the correct location and replacing the manual valve with a reengineered manual vale, they can be checked in park as after the mod, the valve body will direct the fluid to feed the converter in park now, I have done this mod on lots of Mopar's over the years, and yes that is the reason why if the drain back is bad enough the vehicle would not moved park into gear without holding it in neutral for a few seconds 1st or longer in gear before trying to move the vehicle... If you started it in neutral then you could move straight to a gear and start moving the vehicle with no problems...

Few pics of the same 3 speed trans with a stock pan and a later model Jeep 4 speed pan, the a side by side view of them both, the left pan is the regular pan and the right one is the newer Jeep much deeper pan... Yes I also used a spacer between the filter and the valve body...
