Get a bed mat for sure , but what I was going to suggest is to ask your insurance provider whether your work tools would be covered for theft in a truck box , that may make your decision easier .

If you use your truck for work though and transport tools and finished components in boxes , I still say chest style toolbox and canopy .

Ya tools stolen would be covered. They are whenever the vans/trucks get broken into, but its through house insurance

not sure if this would fit what you're looking for but I've considered getting one of these. I have a regular roll top now and love it since I often keep my snowboard and/or golf clubs in the bed and want the extra security.

i think i've seen them but you could get a hard tonneau cover like one made of metal that has a lock. one that to open the tailgate you have to open the top but is also easy to get off.

For me I am probably going with an Undercover tonnueu hard cover.

I keep tools and equipment in my truck and a soft cover for me doesnt feel as safe.
Plus the Undercover kind is not easliy scratched and is only 50 pounds if I need to take it off.

Only problem is the price! $750!!! Which is effing crazy IMO.

For my needs, I have a toolbox that I keep all the stuff that is always in the truck for basic preparedness...trolley jack, emergency roadside toolkit, jumper cables, tow straps, cargo straps, washer fluid, etc...

The jump seats in my Access Cab are hardly ever used, they stay flipped forward with a rubber mat covering 2/3 of the area and a compartment-ed open top tool tray I picked up at Lowe's covering the other 1/3. That area is for gear and stuff I want to keep secure, but that is not always in the truck.

My toolbox is short enough (front to back) that my ATV fits with the tailgate down. Put together the board in attached pics from some scraps I had in my shed...I was a little worried about the internal strength of the tailgate...

That's what works for my needs, just to give you another perspective to consider. I think it comes down to what works for your (and your girlfriend's) needs. Good luck finding the right solution. :)

Roll-up soft tonneau FTW! Keeps the bed dry and clear of snow so I don't have to worry about cleaning it out to use the bed. I can keep small stuff under it when it rains. It keeps things out of sight. I can easily roll it up to carry larger items. Toolbox takes up way too much space, especially for me because furniture is one thing that I move A LOT and I need to have use of the full bed.
