I tested quite a few exhaust systems on a dyno, but my Wife threw out all my notes (along with the dyno sheets). Anyway, From what I found, Flowmasters cause a loss of up to 5 hp, depending on model. Dynomax Super Turbo has shown gains of 8 hp on teh 4.0 V6, and 5 to 6 on the 3.4 V6. Jardine, Borla, TRD, Gibson, have shown about 5 hp on the 4.0, and about 4 on the 3.4. For the first gen 2.7, most mufflers except Flowmaster (which lost 4 hp on the 2.7) showed a gain of about 4 hp. Interestingly enough, A muffler from the 4.7 V8 Tundra engine showed a 5 hp gain on teh 2.7. Exhaust diameter up to 2.5 hp showed minimal differences, but 3" and above seemd to kill bottom end up to about 3000 to 3500 rpm, regardless of engine size.

Its tough for the 2.7, as none really make it sound nice and low.

Yes. On the 3.4 and the 4.0, and it showed about the same gains as the others. 4 to 5 hp.

its weird how flowmasters actually lost power..they sounded good so i considered them as my top 3 choices, but i ended up getting a TRD exhaust.

I had a magna flow Cat back at first, I hated the massive harmonic Drone i was getting from 2100 to 2500 RPMs, basically the main driving band. I ended up switching muffler to flow master, but kept the custom cat-back pipes. Sounds amazing and ass dyno showed no loses.

Ass dyno is not accurate at all.

Seems like the most gain comes from changing out the front Y-pipe and loosing the 2nd set of cats if you are not in California...just as much as a cat-back without the expense...(4-5hp)...custom front Y-Pipe is about $200.

Good info! Which Flowmaster did you test though? Have you tested the 10 series??? It's considered a racing muffler so I wonder if It would perform better than the 40 series for instance. :notsure:
