White grease in drivers side inner CV joint?

I recently bought a 2011 Tacoma and while looking under the truck I discovered a rip in the inner drivers side boot. I noticed a grease that looked very much like white lithium grease seeping out. I had recently driven through some 18" deep water on a flooded roadway so I thought it was grease contaminated with water. I pulled the axle and the grease looks very clean and uniform.Not any water or rust in there. I also had and aftermarket clamp on the inner large side of the boot.
I was searching you tube and came upon a video of a CVJ being dissembled that had the same white grease and was wondering if some aftermarket replacement boot kits had this type of grease. It is a OEM Toyota axle.
I also was unable to remove the axle from the diff and had to split the boot and slide the axle out that way. No matter how hard I pound on the axle it will not budge. I am thinking that the person who last installed the axle maybe distorted the circlip when installing it. I bought a couple of axle removal tools off of Amazon and will try to remove the inner housing that way. Two fit on a slide hammer shaft( 63mm and 48mm) not sure which size would fit best. Also a set of forks/wedges that you pound in like a ball joint removal tool. I have the ECGS bearing and seal kit I need to install as the inner is pretty sloppy (no noise or vibration yet). I may end up messing up the dust shield but I have to get it out as I want to replace the needle bearing.I just bought the Toyota boot kit but may end up buying a new axle if I distort the metal dust shield and can't straighten it out..

 

Pry, spin, pry, spin, pry, spin...until you find the sweet spot.
That fork should work. I use a narrower pickle fork. I've used pry bars before..
Just gotta be able to get behind it and find that sweet spot.

 

I took the rental autozone slide hammer and used one hose clamp to hold it down. I also had to cut the end of the jaw to fit between the diff housing and tulip.

mine was super stuck and the pry bar didn’t work for me.

 

From my experience, if there are any tools you don't have, if you have an oreileys near you make an account with them, they have a free tool rental program where you pay the tool in full price then get it all back when you return the tool.

 

So I guess the golden Toyota grease for the inner joint must whip up into a whiter opaque looking consistency. Great...now I don't have to obsess about cleaning every last bit of the grease up because I thought it was contaminated with water. Also the large clamp for the inner joint is different than the other 3. So the one that was on the inner joint was factory but just has a different clamping mechanism. Does any one know which tool I would use for clamping that one?

I did that. Then I took a break to think about it! Then I did it again! I figured if I split the boot and removed most of the axle it wouldn't be hanging down and applying uneven pressure on the circlip. My phase 2 tools come tomorrow and I will try again. I just have to find out what kind of tool works to clamp that band with out the raised hump to allow the crimp.

 

I see you have the same style of clamp as I do .How did you clamp that? Or did you just replace the axle? I see 2 little tabs that maybe you can hook onto with the jaws of a serrated pliers of some sort and squeeze them together. I just don't want to mess up the clamp.Some times you have one shot .It either works or you destroy the clamp. I do have a slide hammer kit like that so I could try that while I am waiting for my tools to come. Pretty good idea you had there!

 

I assume you are referencing the CV boot clamp not the hose clamp around the tulip.
I just pried mine off and the reboot kit I bought came with 4 ear clamps instead of the 3 and 1. I don’t have experience with the other type.

I messed up my metal dust shield real bad on removal.

ordered this and it just got in, looks right. Despite the warning.

 

The dust cover part number was going to be my next question. You must have ESPN!
Was your boot kit a Toyota part? Maybe I will try to find that type of CV clamp some where.

LOL , I reread your original post and noticed you mentioned the dust shield. Mine was bent to oblivion.
I got the allpro boot kit, seems fine but haven’t even gotten it reinstalled yet, so I can’t speak to the quality of the boot.
That’s my previous lab, she passed away in June, got one more though! This was the last winter.

 

I just rebooted an axle , ive done 3 so far, that 2nd big clip is a bitch, i bought a tool and still couldnt get past the second notch.
I bought some of these.

I had to put my lab down. I got her when she was 10 years old from an older friend of mine who was in a fire and had to have his legs amputated (but lived many productive years). He over fed her and she had heart problems and lived about 1 very happy year after I got her. Broke my heart to put her down.
A picture of her scanning the skies for "birds" when we were on top of a big hill over looking a swamp. Very intense lady. Also liked to lay in the warm sun. Funny how they are drawn to warmth.
Me telling her she was a good girl and her loving it!

 

I'm going to try a needle nose pliers with serrated jaws....if not I will go the aftermarket clamp route. Thanks for the link. It is always encouraging to know other people are having similar problems.

 

Here is what i bought I just didnt have the strength to squeeze the clamp all the way closed.

 

Those look like they would really hook onto the tabs but yes they have such short handles that would be hard to get any leverage.
I stopped by Harbor Freight to look at their pry bars and they had a nice 36" one but I wasn't sure if I had that much room to maneuver under there. I tried a Stanley 36" crowbar I had at home just to see if the length would fit under there and the wedge end would not fit in the gap so I held it about 3" away and jabbed it with some force into the gap and it popped right out! So the overall weight of the bar plus the wedge geometry worked together to pop it out on the first try. I would have never though of using an actual crowbar!

With this I just poked it in once and it popped right out! I tried the the same thing you are showing and it just didn't work. Pry ,turn,pry turn. 15 min later ....no go. Next time just try this. I mean it amazed me when it came out on the first try.

Sweet dude! What’s next? A reboot? If so, see if you can get access to an air hammer for the Cv joint. It was a pain for me to get off.

I tried one like that and it was completely useless for me. Perhaps it’s more about the angle of the axle than I thought.
