I just retired from full time work (wife already fully retired) and I wanted another truck after not having one for about 15 years. I have liked the body style of the 3rd generation Tacoma for years and was paying cash so basically it was a decision between the 2 motors.

My needs are simple...living in flat Florida I wanted a truck to go to Lowes and to pull nothing more than a small U-haul trailer (when needed) and a small pop-up camper we intend on getting in the near future. Also needed a bug out vehicle in case of hurricanes or any other SHTF situation.

I found this truck which is in mint condition and only 40K on the ODO. Got it for a great price and I am very happy. My last new vehicle was a 2012 car so still have to learn the computer crap but I have time for that. I dont plan on pulling single wide trailers and when doing my research I saw the 2.7 is an excellent motor.

I wouldn't mind a 4 cyl, except I wanted a manual... But, that's a great truck that will last you a long time. It's the smiles per hour, not the miles per hour.

You got one of the last years of the access cab, in many ways it doesn't get any better. And that SX is one of the nicest looking trim options IMO

    Access Cab - it rules...

That 2.7 engine is basically bullet proof. It will get you where you're going AND it will get you back home again.

    Enjoy the retirement.!

Enjoy your new truck and retirement. Check this “Bill_Retired” video. Some may not agree with his philosophy, but if it resonates with you he has other videos too.

Stick to 5k mile oil changes and if you are losing any coolant get the system pressure checked. My 2TR went 220k miles until coolant leaked into the cylinders and washed the oil out of No. 1 cylinder that it lost the cross hatch from the rings rubbing on the cylinder wall. Rebuilt it and it’s back in service.

About the same process as this truck -

Coolant service is one area I feel the manufacturers recommended interval is way too long.

The only thing protecting the head gaskets is the coolant, more specifically the additives in the coolant. Freeze protection is the thing most people think about and although the coolant may "test good" the corrosion inhibitors may be depleted.

Mine gets changed out every 3 years, it is an easy & cheap service. From the dealer the coolant is reasonably priced.

I have the transition year 2016 2.7. 4wd, longer bed, access cab, she has about 96k. Washed. Waxed, all maintenance on time (oil change every 4.5 - 5:k) and it runs Lowell. Good luck with your new truck and retirement, I am.

Yep, that’s in agreement with this Car Care Nut video on intervals for fluids where he recommends 3 years for red (1st Gen / pre-04) and 5 years / 50k miles for pink (after 05) and says the recommended interval is much too long.
