Throttle opening, in relation to pedal position also changes.

You can make a free account at NotebookLM, upload the Toyota manual pdf, then use the AI to help create a more natural language searchable document or ask questions in natural language. It links back with a summary and cites the source material. I haven't used exactly this for the manual, but routinely use it for complex collections of dense documents. Works very well.

i just spent 3 days wheeling in colorado and never once thought the truck needed boost in 4lo to drive over obstacles even at 10,000+ feet above sea level on 35s. the gearing allows the truck to crawl easily over things. it most likely limits it so you don't nuke your front diff.

This was at about 12000' elevation and my 4G was performing worse than my 3G did at this same location. Both manual transmission, 4LO, 2nd gear. Unacceptable performance. I am guessing you have an automatic, which is more forgiving in these scenarios.

With zero boost, this engine becomes a low-compression naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder that struggles to move around the weight of the truck. Operation at high altitude only makes the power-to-weight ratio even worse.

I dunno, but most current gen NA engines are pushing 12+. The 2.5 in my wife's RAV4 is 13:1.

BearWithMe, I'm sorry no one seems to be picking up what you're putting down here. This is potentially a big deal. I have a manual 3rd gen and use low range all the time. It's practically a requirement to be in low range on anything remotely technical or steep.

Without boost at 12k' you're looking at well under 150 hp PEAK. That nice fat torque curve starting around 1700 rpm would be in the dirt. No bueno.

Anybody with the 6 speed going to chime in here?

6MT trucks dont hit peak torque still 2800RPM.

His truck is for sure making boost, just gotta downshift and get the RPMs up.

You're going to lose some power even with a turbo at that kind of altitude, turbo has to work harder to compress thinner air.

You're probably down 15% of your total output in HP.

Idk what you're trying to do but it sounds like you might want a different truck.

I want to upgrade my truck at some point; the main appeal to the 4th gen for me is the turbo 4 + MT. I find tuning and MT specific things interesting.

This should be a really simple thing to confirm one way or the other. Personally, I'd be very surprised if it didn't produce some boost, while not expecting full.
