In 1995 I was looking at Dodge Ram pickups... wanted a Cummins 5.9L 12 valve diesel soooo bad! But the upgrade from a 1500 gas to 2500 diesel was almost 10 grand. Granted, gas was under a dollar a gallon and diesel was about $1.40... the math didn't work for me. $10K would have paid for a ton of gas!!!

Oh I’m quite certain this wasn’t a purchase that “makes sense” but I do need a plow truck for a long and uphill driveway. I have a mini excavator and tractor now. I’m always looking for a Skidsteer and have access to one so I have big items I can tow so I justified it to myself lol. Never owned a dually and never owned a diesel so killed two birds with one stone here.

Looking for a shop to buy and have installed some HD rear springs on my '21 OR. Just picked up a used Four Wheel Camper coming in at about 800 lbs empty. Bonus points if you have recently done this and know an approx price. In at the Mass/NH border on I 93. TIA

After having a modern diesel, I can give you all the reasons not to buy one. I just went back to gas and while I miss the power of the diesel, I’m not unhappy with my decision.
At least it’s pre-emission though right? No DEF, might have the EGR (I don’t remember when that came into play). Bulletin proof it and it should run forever.

Yes sir, pre-emissions/DEF system. It does have the EGR and that will be getting “upgraded”. I plan to run it and bullet proof if needed.

Same boat. If I do another diesel, itll be a 5.9 in one form or another. Which means, not from up here.

Current work truck has the 6.4 hemi. Honestly plenty.

06 would be EGR, and catalytic converter. That's it.

I had a 12V 5.9 before I got the Tacoma. 1000ft-lbs is hard to beat when running from light to light or towing but man, those Chrysler automatic transmissions are crap!

I plowed some with an 05 F250 I had when new... At first I was embarrassed at the skinny tires and thought I might upgrade to something a little beefier. Then al the old-salt plow guys told me hell no! The aggressive AT tires that came on it were actually the best for plowing. What the Jeep world refers to as "Pizza Cutters"... I did find out with my TJ Rubicon that my 11.5x33 tires were fun in and off road, but they really did float on top of the snow instead of making contact with pavement. The Jeep was manageable in snow, but slid all over the place. The F250 with narrow tires (I want to say they were 245/75/17) really did "cut" through snow and slop to make great contact with the pavement underneath for great traction. Guys plowing with the really cool wheels and fat off-road tires looked great, but I did pull over to yank a couple out of the snow banks after they got stuck. I never, ever got stuck.

If plowing, especially with a dually... I would (IMHO) recommend not going with "cool" tires and go with what meets your needs. If plowing is at the top of your list, then get some aggressive winter tires in one of the narrower widths appropriate for your make and model truck.

If only plowing once in a while... Cool tires are cool the other three seasons.

Love the advice, thank you! I need tires. Rims are fine. I’m staying in the 245/75r17 and was thinking a BFG KO3 or General Grabber AT. I want to stay narrow for the reasons you described and I’ve been happy with my ATs in general. I briefly thought about a true winter tire set for snow but at 6 tires a set and needing tires now, I’m not sinking 4k into two sets of tires haha.

@Clark27 are you sure the dually isn’t running 235/85’s? That’s a popular size for dually applications

Good question - I am almost positive it’s 245/75 all around but I’ll go double check in a minute. Paperwork should be taken care of today so it will be legal to get moving and get some work done. Tires is a first for sure. Already got rejected by TownFair in NH who didn’t want to do the work. Said the flatbed was “just an inch too wide for the bay” and they couldn’t do the alignment anyways “since it would block the laser”. I have a local tire shop I know with do mount and balance. I got referred to a frame shop local to me for alignment and will likely pull the bed anyway. I want to rewire everything and replace some parts with room to spare. Should be okay to pull the bed with another set of hands and the mini excavator at the house haha.

Make sure you move the lever in the correct direction on the mini when you pull the bed. You want the bucket to go up not down, LOL.

Im no expert with big machines so I move REAL slow. Confirmed rear tires are 245/75. That being said, these are cheap FB tires this kid threw on for the sale so might have come with 235/85

The rear tires should not be touching each other in the set.

Yeah I can fit a sideways fist in between them roughly. There’s a decent little gap between.

Never had one with a slush box. Only manual.

Stick with what the door sticker shows. I feel like I remember one of my service trucks having 245/17s, not 235s.
