thats why you drive with your knees... but I've also driven classic cars with some of the worst rag joints where you had like an inch of wheel play before anything actually moved

I had a rag joint disintegrate once... after I got off the freeway doing 120+. And the car brakes would grab to the left. It would have been ugly had it gone at speed. As it was I blocked traffic a little as the car lurched across traffic, but there was a driveway the car just barely settled in so at least it was off the road. It's a weird feeling when you go to turn the wheel and it just keeps spinning freely.
Most wheel play is the steering box needed to be adjusted with the top nut after it wears over miles and years.

Oh. I am acutely aware of the OEM conditions these boats came in. Adding air bags would be sick though! Especially keeping it 100% stock in every other way. Including hub caps!

The car is too nice to mess with. Other than changing either wheels or wheel covers, and converting the clock to a quartz movement, I'm leaving it alone. It would look sweet lowered and/or bagged, but I bought the car for exactly what it is...a relatively low mile, original, unmolested vehicle.

You make me laugh. On a cross country trip on my motorcycle I blew the rear drive on my BMW just crossing into Illinois from Iowa on route 20. I was on my way to Chicago to visit my oldest daughter in her first year of medical school at Northwestern.

The closest repair place was a Harley dealership and the tow truck arrived just as the shop was closing. The mechanic pulled my bike into the shop, locked up, put me in his pickup and drove me to a hotel. The first thing he did on that short trip was reach into the back seat as he was pulling out of the shop and grabbed two beers and tossed me one.

What a nice guy. Because I was traveling he moved my bike to the front of his repair queue. He ordered the parts needed and fixed my bike perfectly. I paid the bill when he finished and went into the back of the shop and brought him an 6-pack of the beer he was drinking and gave him a big tip.

I will add, sadly since this is the anniversary of 9/11. I left Santa Cruz starting that trip on a day or two after 9/11 happened. I took small roads all the way as I typically did on motorcycle trips and it was so moving crossing the Midwest where there was no air traffic above and about every 10-15 miles on those small roads I passed through another small town and the streets were lined with American flags and messages/signs supporting New York......Tore me up.

Remove the spare tire from the tire well in the trunk, pop the drain plug, fill with ice. (A vestige of my misspent youth.)

Huh... Maybe that's why so many vintage cars have rusted out wheel wells from back in the day. Those people back then were drinkers... (wink)
