Is there anyway to remove the motor and convert the power tailgate to a manual one like on the base trd offroad? Instead of the power up/down knee assist version?

Let me know how you defeat the reporting system that reports to the alarm. Personally, I don't want to dive into it to void my warranty. Warranties are a bit of a blessing and a curse.

I’m just wondering if you can remove the motor or if it is all one assembly? Can the handle also be swapped for a mechanical like on the base TRD OR?

And if you turn off the PTG in the menu will it then bypass everything if disconnected? I know that feature exists if want to remove the tailgate, so that’s why I was wondering. If turn off in menu then figure out a way to take out the motors only leaving the dampening devices that allow a dampened lowering only with a manual up. I know if your just turn off the tailgate in the menu and try to manually close the TG you meet resistance of the motors which i don’t want. But I want the leather and all the stuff with the premium pkg.

In the menu of the MID, you can turn off alerts and the power function. It will still report an open tailgate to the alarm system. Ask me and my neighbors how we know. Especially in the middle of the night.

Waiting for anyone else to chime in on how they got to do it successfully. I figure it has to be a loopback through the circuit.

I still can’t figure out how on a truck that is so built for off-roading and customizing an electric powered tailgate even made it. :(

I mean to get leather, sunroof and all the features of the premium pkg I have to get this dumb tailgate. If can’t bypass I will just get a base TRD offroad with 14” screen upgrade
    ( audio upgrade only ).

That and the smallish gas tank is what prevents it from being perfect. For me. Both easily avoidable, which is what is so frustrating.

Do you have a 4th gen or is this a pre-sale question?

The reason this is coming up is I have a 23 Tundra just outside the recall right now for the engine. However, with so many 22-25 Tundras still having engine failures I am looking at just going back to a Tacoma. The tundra issues I have are the active front aero spoiler is a disaster and can cost anywhere from $500-$2500 to fix/replace parts, starting in 2025 any premium pkg on Sr5 and up comes with the power tailgate which has been a bunch of them getting snagged and not opening properly with or without a bed cover, the center console with the sliding trays always creaks and rattles, the driver seat side cracks all the time on the new tundra ( mine has not ), no bed lights unless you get a premium pkg so are spending $62K plus to get bed lights ( Standard on all taco's now ), can get the Tacoma in a TRD OR base without any extra junk except the 14" screen and spray in (Southeast Toyota Region).

There are 2 motors one in each side. I’m sure it can be easily removed or disabled.

another option is get the audio upgrade and purchase a leather katskin seat covers which to me looks OEM or better. You’d probably lose the heated and ventilation features though.

Toyota should consider deleting out the power tailgate from OR premium/TH/Pro packages and offering it as a standalone option. Same for pop out speakers and Iso seats. Replace with real front grab handles, 21gal tank, rear center arm rest. Slap on a finished rear window seal, and good to go.

I don't like the automed mechanism as they are slow and probably don't work with a dead battery.

If your truck has a dead battery, the tailgate not opening or closing is the least of your worries I would think.
