It's for my daughter so I'm gonna try and do a purple starburst from nearly pink to blurple
It's a veneer of course on a solid mahogany body but looks great so far for $170.
Traced for the head stock and a belly cut last night.

I'm a few days away, but I picked up some dye, I'll probably do some cutting and sanding tomorrow evening

IMG_20250911_183415_161.jpg It's a pretty thin veneer so I light hit it with 0000 steel wool, evidently there was a bit of glue that doesn't wanna take the dye so I'm gonna hit it again with steel wool and hope it works

It's still noticeable but it's much better on the glue spots

A guy I play with suggested wax because it doesn't constrict the wood like a hard clear would, but I'm worried that fabric dye may fade if I don't do something a little more protective, so I was leaning towards polyacrylic since everything has be water based so far

Ya, canadian product made in Quebec. Hard to find non water based stuff with all the regulations in place these days. Find a hardwood floor finisher and MAYBE he could source something...should be easier down there but not familiar with enviro restricts south of the 49th.

I've attached the spec pdf here...you could give them a call...

Something else to look at is marine based applications such as
Bad link... this is the name
    Epifanes Clear Gloss Varnish, Pint

There is a (former, I think) Gilson employee here...was it @jwctaco ? Someone will chime in

I used to work for Heritage Guitars, don’t play, don’t really know much about them other than the woodworking end of them. The finish they use, as well as Gibson is Nitro Cellulite, they been using it for years, very toxic, must be sprayed, multiple coats, like 10 plus and sanded between each coat and then buffed multiple times.

I was gonna suggest Nitro Cellulose. Used it when I refinished my Tele 25yrs ago. I was thinking the OP was looking for something applied by hand.

Some guitar nerds say that if it’s not done in Nitro Cellulose it changes the sound, especially Les Paul nerds. I worked with a bunch of Les Paul fans, some don’t like the use of a CNC router for machining of the wood parts. Like anything, it can be a deep rabbit hole.

I'm a bourbon snob, so I don't have much latitude here lol...

My CE22 has acrylic urethane finish and the neck would be nitro...according to PRS themselves. I should sand off the nitro to see if it changes the sound

So I am dry fitting the neck and notice a bit of discrepancy from one side to the other. I started to sand the difference out, but after sanding a ~.5mm correction, it doesn't seem to be impacting the top side and much as it is the bottom, so I have stopped for the moment, is the neck rolled to the high side for easier shredding? Kinda kidding. It's even on both sides at the fret ~44.1mm, seems to just be the piece that goes under the pickup

Nice work, I too was coming on here to suggest nitrocellulose. That's what I used on the guitar I built, because that's what vintage Gibson and other companies used.

Also, just noticed this thread, been playing for like 25 years maybe? Used to be in bands, now pretty much just play to scratch the proverbial creative itch. Main guitars are an old Gibson LP, Reverend charger (with soap bar p/u) and a frankenstrat that I built and finished in Sonic Blue with a "mint green" pickguard.

I feel like I may be over sharing, but meh... I had some polycrylic so I decided to give it a shot. I've got 3 coats on the back, and just applied the 2nd to the front, but it's making it pop pretty good (reposted unsealed photo for side by side comparison) I may be done at 3 coats on the back but I'm thinking I'll do 4 on the front and then buff everything as shiney as I can.
