No but I look at pictures of that at work too.
That's at the Trollhaugen Ski Resort.

Some more images from today. I really liked that place. Very different from Tigerton. Tigerton is like Moab (not all obviously) in that it is "slick" rock and fairly low consequence. Iron Range? Lots of "put on your big boy pants" and the rock is Hard, sharp and unforgiving. Liked it a lot.

Low consequence is what I enjoy, especially since my truck is also my daily driver, lol. So next time y'all go to Tigerton I'd join for that.

If I had an old Jeep that I could beat to hell I think Iron Range would appeal to me more.

There's plenty of 'low consequence' sharp turns on steep grades that'll keep your knuckles white and your sphincter tight.

Seems like "big boy pants" = "I can afford to break my truck" in this scenario.

I'm still interested in checking it out sometime, though.

I'm fine with that, it's large sharp rocks I don't like and deep water too.
Being in tight trees or near steep edges don't bother me much.

It's funny because I hate rock gardens when mountain biking as well

No... There are going to be consequences; but, go slow and use a spotter. Or put on 40's and a LS.

Yes. Those to. Had at least one switch back today that was a multi point turn on a steep descent.

What consequences? If you're talking body damage, then that would fall into the "I can afford to break my truck" category.

Why an LS? There are easier ways to get more power.

Although, power has yet to be an issue for anything I've wanted to do.

Being a manual transmission driver I find I want lower gear ratios than more power, 1st lo doesn't feel slow enough sometimes.
Burning out my clutch is always on my mind off roading especially going in reverse to get out of something.

But that is an expensive fix either with a new transmission, I believe the 4th gen has better gear ratios and fits without modification. Or re gearing my diffs.

In the AT, I've been using S mode in 4lo and setting it to not go above 3rd.

Edit: I don't know the specifics behind what it's doing in S (that might require reading the owners manual) but the truck acts like my riding mower with the hydrostatic drive....the transmission will do the work of slowing down without braking.

Toyota doesn't give us a great crawl gear. I think that's why dual transfer cases are such a nice upgrade for manual transmission tacos in particular. If money were no object, I'd add one to the 4Runner. Otherwise, a regear is a good option.

S mode limits the top gear to whatever you select. Plus. I believe it makes the transmission engine brake more, as you said.

I usually do 4lo and S1 on more complicated obstacles and steep descents. Otherwise, I use 4lo and S3 a lot, same as you mentioned.

Here is the guy that upgraded transmissions. About $4k.
Regear would probably cost the same.
A Marlin taco box would be awesome but even more money

Regear is one of those things I would have a shop do. And if I did do it I probably would drive out to ecgs to have them do the work. My wife's brother lives in NC so it can be a justified trip lol

But for me a rear locker is my next big purchase.

ECGS can add a locker while they regear. ;)

you can get the assembled 3rd and clamshell from ECGS so it wouldn't be super hard.
