I just performed this repair on my truck. The top 510 resistor had completely fallen off. Fortunately the risistor was hiding in the plastic housing. I used a small clamp to secure it to the circut board and soldered both sides.

The display works like a charm!!

Thanks so much for this fix!!

It looks like I'll be doing this next weekend when I get home. My display quit working a couple weeks ago and I'm grateful that I found this thread instead of letting the dealership rob me blind!

One of the resistors was completely missing so I just used a Carbon Composition one.

Why isn't this already a sticky? I waited until mine died as I knew it would and sure enough at 66K it went off. Going to fix it this weekend.

By any chance does anyone know if the 4cyl Prerunners are pre wired for the compass if the truck came with an overhead console? I do miss the compass...:( I know the 2.7L main harness did not have the fog lights pre wired like on the 6 cyls, so I am guessing probably not.

I opened up the panel and gained access to the circuit board and to my amazement I saw exactly the same seperated resistor. $15.00 dollars later for a soldering kit and it works. The soldering job looks like hell but it works fine so far.

I've fixed those 510's so many times. Finally thought I would replace them all together this time so I installed the 47k Ohm one's as detailed and it didn't freaking work. Decent solder job too! Put the original 510's back on and now it's working (for now!). Go figure;)

I re-soldered mine today and it works just fine. Mine was just barely cracked and not discolored. Added solder to all the 510 joints.

Isn't the ohms suppose to be (51) ohms or at least (47) ohms? Not 47K. If so installing the 47K would cut the power too much and no display would show. :)

Another issue now. The sunglasses pocket used to shut tight but now after removal and repair of the temp gauge the pocket is loose. This ever happen to anyone doing this repair? Could the entire console perhaps need further pressing into the headliner? The latch end is what is loose now, used to when closing it, it would bottom out so to speak then the latch would cam over the spot that holds it tight. If I can't get it to tighten up I see a rattle developing there.

EDIT: I took a real close look at the console pocket area yesterday. Seems that end of the console the black metal part has slightly separated from the gray plastic part right at the pocket end as if the entire assy. did not fit back into the headliner just right on that end. Not looking forward to running those metal clips down but it looks like it comes back out this weekend to see if it will fit the headliner better on that end. It is separated by the amount that the pocket is loose.

EDIT: I removed the console again tonight and the clips were easier to find this time. The back portion of the console had separated a bit from me pulling it loose the first time. Two tabs were not engaged at the very back between the gray outer plastic and the black plastic pocket. Squeezed them together and now the console fits nice and flush against the headliner and the pocket is now tight on the rubber stops again. You get used to having that temp gauge to look at and the compass too. Glad it is all repaired and working again.

Any idea if the 2.7L Prerunners are pre wired for the compass if the overhead console is installed?

My compass/temp gauge went out last week. I finally got around to fixing it today. It took longer for the soldering iron to heat up then to remove, repair, and replace the unit.

Thanks a bunch $$$$$$ for posting this way back 40 pages ago.

First of all, Big Thanks for the how to fix. All is good again. Second mine had a large burn mark on the corner of the LCD and it did not effect opperation. Hardest part to fix was a steady hand to re-solder.:D

    Thanks, Rickz
