Glovebox Lock / Vehicle Vault

I'm sorry if the search failed me, but I'm looking for a mod that I can do to add a lock to my glove box, or a small safe to my armrest compartment. I SWEAR I've seen something like that around here, but I can't seem to find it now.

I'd rather add a lock to the glovebox, b/c I'm pretty sure that it'd be less expensive than buying a vehicle safe ($300+ from what I've seen in my brief search). It doesn't have to be terribly secure, just something that kids can't get into.

Anybody have any advice? Any old items you're looking to sell? Anything??

Nice Box!! Takes care of the need for a lock box to legaly store your pistols.

(was told by LEO that this is requierd in Texas if you leave the vehicle unattended with a pistol inside)

 

This is exactly why I want it. I'm not from Texas and never travel there, but the last thing I want is an unlocked gun in my truck. All I really want is to be able to keep kids out of it (which a glove-box lock would do), but making it even more secure might be a good idea. Still... the cheapest of the ones tacomaman posted was $250 at Costco. Not exactly cheap!

Yea, they sure are not cheap! You have all the right things in mind as to why someone should buy one though.

 

Since I recently got my CCW and have had to leave my carry piece in the truck a few times I started thinking about how to secure it without spending tons of money (save it for other toys). Tonight I started looking into what it will take to build my own version of this type of console lock-box but with less wasted room. I'm thinking it would require pulling the entire console and reinforcing the existing plastic sides from the bottom to give secure points for attaching a locking top and not making it easy to pry open by just breaking the plastic sides. Would probably be a sufficient deterent without that but if I'm jumping in, I'm doing it big. I'll post pics if I come up with a solution that doesn't cost more than just buying the drop-in version.

 

A little different design than a console insert. I haven't measured it to see if it would fit. The box is 100 and a sleeve is 25 at Cabelas, might be cheaper elsewhere.

I really like this one. It'd be nice to have a locking case that could bolt into the truck and be carried outside of the truck, too. I'll do a few measurements in the morning to see if it would fit. It looks a bit tall... especially with that handle. I also wonder if the sleeve would bolt into the truck the way it's supposed to.

I'm definitely going to show it to my father-in-law. He has a Tundra with a HUGE center console.

 

I just ordered a vault from Costco... $249.99+ tax shipped. I decided against the locking gun case b/c a gun isn't the only reason I want the vault. This will add a little more versitility.

Great idea! I just bought one to to have my CCW locked and protected when I have to leave it in the truck. Costco had the best price for me including tax.

 

this is what I have under my seat..........the cable is lock to the bolted down seat frame. Holds my Fullsize 1911 .45 and 2 mags.

It looks like it'll work but won't be as clean as the professional stuff. I just don't have the tools and/or patience to make it perfect.

It's certainly not as 'pretty,' but it looks pretty hard-core. Nice job so far. I'll be watching for the completion and installation. If I had your skills I might try something similar, but suckers like me have to pay somebody else to do things like that. Now if you need somebody to do your taxes....
